Veteran Kannada actor MS Umesh dies at 80: Report

New Delhi: Veteran Kannada film actor Mysore Srikantayya Umesh, popularly known as MS Umesh, died at Kidwai Hospital on Sunday after a battle with cancer, according to a report in Deccan Herald. He was 80 years old.

A multi-faceted artiste known for his impeccable comic timing and soulful characterization, Umesh leaves behind a cinematic legacy spanning six decades and over 400 films. His demise has sparked a wave of mourning in the Kannada film industry, with political leaders and film personalities expressing their condolences.

Early career and rise in Sandalwood

Umesh started his illustrious career as a child artist with BR Panthulu’s film Makkala Rajya, marking his entry into Sandalwood. Over the years, he has shared the screen with some of the most iconic actors of Kannada cinema, including Dr. Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh and Ananth Nag.

Umesh was particularly renowned for his comic roles, blending impeccable timing with emotional depth. According to the same report, the Minister of Backward Class Welfare and Kannada and Culture, Shivraj Thangadagi expressed grief, saying:

“Umesh is one of the most talented actors in the film industry. It is unfortunate that a wonderful artist with such soulful acting passed away due to cancer. In his demise, the Kannada film industry has lost an outstanding artiste. May God give his fans and family the strength to bear the loss.”
