Actor Vir Das spoke to us about how he got the opportunity to host the International Emmy Awards, to be held on November 25 this year.
Vir Das is back at the International Emmys- last year, he was supposed to lift the trophy in the comedy category for his special Landing– and this year, as the host. He has become the first Indian to do so. When told about it, he said, “I won the Emmy last year, and about four months later, the team contacted me and said they want me to do this. I knew about it for a while, they just announced it. From being a nominee to a category winner and now hosting it, it’s a ridiculous privilege. It’s not something I expected at all. Last year, I didn’t even expect to be nominated for my work. But I’m letting the people around me celebrate, for me it will happen when the work is done.”

The 45-year-old actor is a seasoned performer for his stand-up shows, having performed around the world. But when it comes to an award ceremony like the International Emmy – given today’s sensitive climate when someone can get hurt by a joke, would he think twice before saying anything on stage?
“I haven’t started working on my script yet, I haven’t written a single word because I’m busy editing my co-directed film Happy Patel, produced by Aamir Khan. But funny remains funny, wherever you are in the world. Sensibilities may change, but if you start thinking about what’s going to get you in trouble… anybody who has been in trouble would have never thought they would get in trouble, for things they never expected. All you can do is your job, try to be authentic. Then whatever happens, happens,” Das quipped.
The awards ceremony will take place on November 25. “Forget about thinking twice before I say anything on stage, I don’t even think once,” he adds.
Is there any topic that is taboo for him? He says, “The limits are set by the audience, not me.”
