Popular film director and producer C. Vitri Maran has approached the Madras High Court challenging the refusal of the sensor certificate for Andrea Jeremia-Starr Tamil Movie. ManushiHe built by and directed by Gopi Nanner.
Justice n. Anand Venkatesh has been slated to hear his writ petition on Monday (June 2, 2025).
According to the petitioner, he produced the film, which belongs to the custodial inquiry of a woman under his production house, Grassroot Film Company.
He said that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in September 2024 refused to issue a sensor certificate for the film on the basis that its contents depicted the state in poor light and the film confuses leftist communism with mainstream communism.
Saying that he was neither given the opportunity to listen before denying the censor certificate nor was informed about the personal views of the members of the censor committee, the petitioner said that he had presented a representation to CBFC on March 29, 2025, requesting the constitution of an expert committee, which included human rights activists to re -examine the film.
The petitioner sought a direction to CBFC to consider his representation and issue an order for the film to a speech after the film’s re -examination. He also said that he was ready to edit the film, if no visual speech fell within the parameters of speech and freedom of expression.
The trailer of the film released by the production house, and was shared on his social media accounts by actor Vijay Sethupathi, was given significant praise in April 2024, as he showed a woman’s custodial torture scenes to be a terrorist.
Apart from this, Ms. Andrea, Nasir, Tamiz, Hakim Shah, and Balaji Sathivale also acted in the film. Flood composer Ilaiyaraja composed music for the film starring Mr. Nanar, known for Nayantara-Starr Aram,
