New Delhi: Last week, Vivek Oberoi’s comment on the fleeting nature of fame and the possibility of even the biggest superstars eventually being forgotten took the internet by storm.
During a lengthy discussion on fame, legacy and how public memory changes over time, Oberoi commented, “In 2050, people will say, ‘Who is Shahrukh Khan?’ Maybe. Like today, people may wonder, ‘Who is Raj Kapoor?’ We say he is the God of cinema. But if you ask any youth who is a fan of Ranbir (Kapoor), he might not even know Raj Kapoor. History pushes you into nothingness.”

Do netizens agree with Vivek Oberoi?
A viral Reddit post sparked a new debate on Vivek’s statement.
One user defended Oberoi, writing, “This Shahrukh statement thing keeps coming up so often. I had to look and see what he actually said. People have made so much fuss about a statement given in a different context. Everyone keeps twisting it as per their own.”
The user said, “I mean, that’s the nature of social media. But every time it seems like only a few people know – that too on Reddit with a different perceived opinion.”
Another user said that while Oberoi’s broader point is valid, he still took SRK’s earlier statement out of context: “‘Last of the Stars’ means that going forward, stars will have relevance only for their current box office, not for cultural or social impact. Their popularity will not impact society in the same way and they will not have extremely die-hard fans. In this regard, SRK will be one of the last to do so. Both Vivek and SRK are right… Time’s waiting for someone.” Doesn’t and eventually forgets everyone.”

A third user criticized Oberoi, saying, “At least they will ask ‘Who SRK?’ I doubt ‘Who Vivek Oberoi?’ There will even be a question.”
Another comment pointed out that some legacies withstand time: “People remember Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Big B… they have transcended time to some extent. Of course new generations will forget people, but some names still stand.”
One user said, “It may not be as soon as 2050, more like 2080, when most of us will be old, but he has a point.”
