What is winter windburn and dryness? Check out your doctor’s tips for how to protect your skin

Winter wind burn is the term used to describe burns caused by exposure to cold, dry winds. It causes dryness, redness and irritation by depriving the skin of its natural oils. Winter windburn and dryness refers to skin irritation and dehydration caused by exposure to cold, dry air as well as harsh winds during the winter months. These conditions can cause the skin to become rough, hard, and irritated, as well as redness, flaking, and even cracking in severe cases. The lack of moisture in the air, combined with indoor heating, exacerbates the problem, making the skin more susceptible to damage. Look for ingredients that attract and retain water, like shea butter, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid. Also, use a gentle, fragrance-free and moisturizing or cream-based cleanser. Applying hyaluronic acid or niacinamide layered skin care is also an option. Apply a heavy, protective balm to your lips before leaving the house.

Protecting your skin from strong winds will help prevent windburn. Wear a face mask and scarf to cover exposed areas. Although UV rays are still present and can cause irritation on sensitive skin, many people do not use sunscreen during winter.

Look for products with chamomile, colloidal oatmeal, and aloe vera that will soothe your skin. While hot baths are a tempting treat, they will increase dryness, which will strip your skin of essential oils. Take a shower immediately and use warm water instead.
