Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, who passed away on Monday (December 16, 2024) at the age of 73, left behind a vast, lasting legacy. There were many interesting encounters with the cinematic style of Hussain, a colorful cultural chameleon. Apart from composing music for famous films, he also made cameos in some famous films and documentaries.
His last appearance in a film was much discussed monkey Man (2024), Starring and directed by Dev Patel. In one scene, Zakir Hussain, playing the role of a table master, takes aim at the protagonist, Kid, (Dev Patel), who works in an underground fight club.
The child reacts to the beat of the tabla played by Hussain’s character and hits the punching bag. It’s a random but enjoyable sequence as we see people cheering for the unusual Jugalbandi, monkey Man Released in multiple countries on April 05, 2024. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has not yet approved its release in India.
Hussain provided background music Manto, Nandita Das’s biopic is on Urdu poet Saadat Hasan Manto. Nawazuddin Siddiqui played the lead character. Hussain composed the music for the highly acclaimed English play Mr. and Mrs. Iyer. Directed by Aparna Sen, the film starring Rahul Bose and Konkona Sen Sharma was a relationship drama amidst intense conflict. Hussain’s atmospheric music was one of the highlights of the film.
Great musicians also participated instrument, 1998 Hindi film.The film is reportedly based on famous singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. In the film about two sisters with great musical talent, Hussain plays a music director who becomes attracted to one of the sisters.
However, his character is short-lived as he dies in a car accident. Hussain was one of the film’s composers, along with Yashwant Dev, Bhupen Hazarika and Raj Kamal.
Hussain acted heat and dust and also composed the music for a 1983 English historical drama. In the film he played the role of a humble civil servant. He also played a small role in the Tamil film Thanthu Witten Ennai (1991), romantic drama starring Vikram and Rohini. Lutz Leonhardt wrote and directed the documentary on Hussein, titled Zakir and his friends.
