According to Hindu mythology, young Krishna loved butter, milk and other dairy cuisines. It is said that when Krishna raised the Govardhan hill to protect the people of Vrindavan from the torrential rains caused by the anger of Lord Indra, he kept it for seven days and nights without eating anything.
Before this incident, Krishna will have eight meals a day. In seven days, it is 8 × 7 = 56 food volume. As a mark of gratitude and devotion, the villagers offered him 56 different foods after the rain, which became a tradition of cheering.
