It’s a heated debate in the US right now, but presidential election season is here. The first official presidential debate between Republican POTUS candidate Donald Trump and Democrat POTUS candidate Kamala Harris ended last night, with many calling Kamala the unofficial winner of the verbal duel. Taylor Swift agrees. Not only that, she has made her allegiance to the first-time POTUS candidate very clear, without mincing words.
In a detailed, no-holds-barred post, Taylor announced in no uncertain terms that she would indeed be casting her vote for Kamala. Taylor’s article, on which comments are restricted for obvious reasons, came shortly after the presidential debates ended, which appears to have inspired the singer to openly express her political stance. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for rights and causes I think need a warrior to advance them. I think she is a steady, talented leader and I believe we can accomplish a lot in this country if we lead with peace and not chaos,” one wrote in part. She also expressed how impressed she was with Kamala’s selection of Tim Walz as her running mate, noting his long-standing work in favour of LGBTQ+ rights, IVF and a woman’s right to her own body. In the note, Taylor also briefly addressed the mess she found herself in when a misleading AI-generated video of her supporting Trump was officially circulated.
Many have praised Taylor’s outspoken stance, including opinion and news programs. Final Words Lawrence O’Donnell called it “the most important celebrity ad ever”. Not really a celebrity ad, he also said, “Its timing is absolutely brilliant, its words are flawless. For someone who has never been influenced by a celebrity ad, it’s perfect and powerful”.
However, one thing that has left some people a little confused is why she decided to sign her strongly worded open letter to “childless cat ladies”. For those who don’t know, it was a conscious decision, and a very clever response at that, which only further reinforced what Taylor was saying, albeit in a cheeky way.
Why did Taylor Swift call herself a ‘childless cat lady’?
In 2021 when Trump was in the midst of his second presidential campaign (which ultimately fell out in favor of Democratic nominee Joe Biden and his vice-presidential candidate Kamala), his running mate J.D. Vance made some unflattering comments regarding the ‘kind’ of women prominent figures in the Democratic coalition were. Even taking on specific names, including Kamala and AOC, Vance stressed how the US was being run by Democrats – “a bunch of childless pussy women who are unhappy with their lives and the choices they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country unhappy as well”. In an explosive 2021 interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Vance reiterated his statement, saying, “It’s just a basic fact – you look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC – the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people with no children… And how does that make sense that we’ve handed our country over to people who really have no direct stake in it?”
Not only that, Vance seems to have some morbid fascination with pushing the whole cat lady trope. In response to American economist Paul Krugman’s comments on pro-natalism and Trump in 2021, Vance casually responded, “Paul Krugman is just one of many weird cat ladies who have too much power in our country. We must change that”.
Speaking of Taylor, she loves keeping receipts. At the time, she was a proud childless cat lady, which is what she wrote on her ad post.
Speaking of elections, the United States will learn the identity of its 60th president this winter on November 5th.
