Danny Trejo on American Warrior
American Warrior is about an MMA fighter named Jai (Vishy Iyer) who turns his life around through the sport and escapes from the world of crime. Danny, who plays a seasoned fighter in the film, says he can connect with the concept of redemption in the film. “My life has been a story of redemption,” he says, “I don’t know if people know I was in prison. I was an ex-con, and I spent time in San Quentin. So if you Read My Life is about changing it. I can totally relate to Jai’s character.”
The actor agrees that the similarities between Jai and him helped him say yes to the project. He added, “I’m always connected to a redemption story because I’ve had a very difficult past. And also, when I saw Latin actors and a Latin director, I was really inspired.” Directed by Gustavo Martin, American Warrior also stars Veronica Falcon and Taylor Treadwell.
Danny Trejo on how cinema changed his life
Danny had a difficult childhood, beginning with drug abuse at the age of 8 and involvement in drug deals soon thereafter. He was arrested for the first time at the age of 10 and spent time in prison at the age of 12. No wonder he believes cinema saved him. After getting sober in his 30s, he managed to turn his life around by turning to film roles in his 40s.
“I probably would have been dead or, you know, in jail (without cinema),” he says. “Cinema saved me, and I always started. I get up in the morning with a start. Today Who can I help? And believe it or not, it led me to a film career.”
Even at the age of 80, the Latino star continues to work and make several films every year. Ask her what keeps her going, and the simple answer is, “It’s love!” He explains, “I love what I do. I love my work. And for someone who was in jail for so long, when I came out, I just wanted to work and get paid.” Wanted. And it’s for my family’s sake too, that I leave the house.” The legacy is behind.”
After a successful premiere at IFFI, American Warrior, an independent film, is expected to get a wide release in India. The veteran actor has promised to come to India if that happens.
