Her father Krishnamurthy, a Sanskrit scholar, sacrificed his career to support her interest in dance.
She learned Bharatanatyam from Rukmini Devi Arundale at Kalakshetra (Madras). She learned Kachchipudi from great teachers like Vedantam Lakshmi Narayana Shastri, Pasumarthi Venu Gopal Sharma, Chinta Krishnamurthy and Vedantam Satyanarayana Sharma. Her training in Odissi was under teachers like Pankaj Charan Das and Kelucharan Mohapatra.
In the last days of her life, she lived in New Delhi and ran an institute called Nritya Kaustubh.
