Chennai: In the last 40 years, veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam has not only woven cinematic mantras with ideas-stimulated narratives in various languages, but has also shaped the career of many actors.
In fact, time and again, many artists, especially new people, have expressed a desire to cooperate with them and learn the art of filmmaking. He is one of the dream directors of every actor in the Indian film industry, with whom there is a desire to work.
During an interview with ANI recently, Mani Ratnam was evident about being called “Dream Director”.
“Some people would like to have a dream to be a dream,” they took a pinch.
Explaining his collaborative process with the actors, Mani Ratnam said, “So, it is not that you want to work with many actors .. (This is a two-way process) but it shows how much you appreciate their talent and how much you like this kind of film. You must have something, especially if they really like to work with you.
“I must have something to offer,” he said.
The director of the ‘Kannathil Muthital’ feels that when they cooperate with them, they should have something enough to present the actors.
“I can’t just take a film because they want to work with me. I should be able to give them something more or almost as good as they have done before.”
Mani Ratnam has worked with a sargam of actors including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and R Madhavan.
His upcoming film ‘Thug Life’ will see him renovating with Kamal Haasan after three decades. He previously collaborated on the 1987 film ‘Naikan’.
When he was asked about the grand renovation with Kamal Haasan and any change he got, Mani Ratnam laughed and said that he replied, “He (Kamal Haasan) is also a writer. Therefore, he takes half the defect or half credit”
“But it’s good.. you can cooperate not only on making but also on the idea process, on what the material is and how it can be developed and how it can be eliminated. The whole process can be easy. As a director, it’s a pleasure when you have an actor who is very good. Now, if you have an actor who writes with you, then it is more easy,” he shared.
Co-written by Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam, ‘Thug Life’ is scheduled to release in theaters on 5 June.
The film also stars Trisha Krishnan, Sanya Malhotra, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lectmi, Jujo George, Nasar, Ali Fazal and Rohit Saraf.
