New Delhi:

Zeenat Aman dug out an old interview hosted by BBC Asian Network, in which she spoke about the trajectory of her career and the role of heroines in the realm of Indian commercial cinema. Dressed in a red saree and a shiny blouse, Zeenat Aman can be heard saying, “In the framework of Indian commercial cinema, it is very easy to get stuck with labels. And I think, it is very difficult for people to break away from it, when it is imposed on them. Mind you, in Indian commercial cinema, women sing songs, they look pretty, they do some crying scenes and that’s it.” Zeenat Aman also said that she got recognition from Hare Rama Hare Krishna and eventually got “assimilated” into the mainstream mode. However, the actress went on to do strong roles in films like Bandhan Kachche Dhaage Ka, Insaaf Ka Tarazu and Satyam Shivam Sundaram. The actress concluded that labelling her as a “glamour-puss” was a biased view.

Zeenat Aman shared a long note about the interview and its relevance in her life. She wrote, “There’s nothing better than a video from the late 80s that makes me feel like a fossil! BBC Asian Network invited me for a long interview at such a crucial juncture in my life. I was just getting out of the public eye, had become a mother of one, but not yet two. And was totally in “family mood”.

She further added, “Seeing myself frozen in time in such interviews is even more surreal than looking at my old filmography. I thought I had already experienced so much of life, and everything would be easy now. Oh! Was I wrong. It makes me laugh to see that the Zeenat I thought would be so mature back then, now seems like such an innocent and sweet young girl to me. So just remember that when times are tough, better things await you. And when times are good, enjoy it to the fullest because some difficulty is bound to come.”

The movie veteran added, “Anyway, ignore my “You Tarzan, Me Jane” outfit and enjoy this clip of my thoughts on my career and that stubborn “glamour-puss” tag! This is quite rare as it was during a time when I made very few public appearances. I was going to post a picture of my new haircut but this seemed more fun! And as always, your thoughts and comments are welcome.”

She wrote in the post script, “I can’t take credit for this video, but you can find the full interview on YouTube!”

Like her other posts, this post too received appreciation from fans of different generations. A fan wrote, “We demand ZA audio book! It’s a great genre.” Another fan wrote, “Urge you to write a biography.” Another comment read, “We don’t want to ignore anything about your 80s look.” Take a look:
