LONDON – Zoe Kravitz says her directorial debut “Blink Twice”, which she also co-wrote and produced, is a story of power dynamics between men and women that was born out of her own experiences.
In the psychological thriller, waitress Frida (played by Naomi Ackie) and her friend think they’ve hit on a lucky break when tech billionaire Slater King invites them to his private tropical island.
What starts off as a wonderful vacation is endless partying with Slater’s friends, but soon Frida begins to realize something is wrong. As she begins to dig deeper, Frida discovers the shocking truth beneath the destination’s ideal facade and the vacation turns into a battle for survival.
“It really comes from my own experience. It’s very personal,” Kravitz, 35, said at the film’s London premiere on Monday.
“I think it’s really an expression of the feelings of a lot of women living in the world,” she said of the writing process.
Kravitz said, “I felt like there were a lot of things that women had to do or were expected to do that had become so normalized that we don’t even talk about them. And so I really wanted to find a way to explore the complexity and the absurdity of it.”
The film brought Kravitz and Tatum, who got engaged last year, together. She had not met Kravitz when Tatum offered her the role of Slater.
“This movie has changed my whole life,” said Tatum, who also produced the film. He added that the role is unlike anything he has played in his nearly two-decade-long career.
“Normally I’ve always had some sort of connection, I bring some personal aspect of my life to every character I play. This film is not that kind of film. This is the first thing I’ve done that is very far removed from me or anyone I know,” he said.
The film’s cast also includes Adria Argiona, Christian Slater, Geena Davis, Kyle MacLachlan and Haley Joel Osment.
“Blink Twice” will be released in theaters worldwide on August 21.
