Zubeen Garg death investigation: SIT to meet Singapore Police as tension increases due to protests outside Baksa jail

Mumbai: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the untimely demise of Assam cultural icon Zubeen Garg is set to meet Singapore Police forces on Tuesday to get details of the singer’s last moments during his stay in Singapore.

Garg died on September 19 when he was on a yacht with his manager Siddharth Sharma, bandmates Shekharjyoti Goswami, Amritprabha Mahanta and his cousin Sandipan Garg in Singapore as members of the Assam Association. All the above people along with festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahant are now behind bars due to their alleged role in the demise of the iconic singer.

CID special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta and SP rank officer Tarun Goyal arrived in Singapore on Monday as members of the SIT probing Garg’s death.

SIT members will have a meeting with Singapore authorities on Tuesday and will probably look for CCTV footage of the hotel where Garg last stayed.

Notably, violent protests broke out outside the Baksa district jail last week after five accused in the Zubeen Garg death case were brought to the jail under heavy police security.

In view of the rising tension, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) to prevent further unrest.

The situation became volatile when an agitated mob gathered outside the Baksa District Jail complex demanding that the two accused – festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahant and Zubeen Garg manager Siddharth Sharma – be produced before the public.

The mob pelted stones, injuring a woman police officer and damaging several vehicles in the police convoy. Security forces used batons to disperse the protesters and several persons were detained for unlawful assembly.

District Magistrate Gautam Das immediately issued an order banning all types of public meetings, rallies, demonstrations and processions within 500 meters of Buxa jail.

The order also bans carrying weapons like sticks, daggers, spears and swords as well as throwing any inflammable substance including stones or firecrackers.

The directive cited apprehensions of “disturbance of public peace and tranquility due to the disturbed situation observed near District Jail, Nikshi, Baksa” and warned that any violation would attract strict legal action under relevant provisions of law.
