Mini fest in Chennai: Celebrate the imagination, with 'The Kooks'

When the fate of the world depends on a secret recipe, five eccentric chefs – Capsy, Soufflé, Macaroni, Milo and Idli – step in to save the day.

As The Little Theater raises the curtain on the 15th edition of The Little Festival, audiences can take a peek into the lives of people quietly cooks. Keeping the philosophy of clowning at their heart, this group of bumbling, awkward cooks transform the kitchen into a playground where absolutely anything is possible.

“Cooks Krishnakumar Balasubramaniam (KK), artistic director of The Little Theatre, says, “It is a celebration of the human imagination when it breaks free from the limits of what we think is possible.”

This year’s edition of the Little Festival, from July 12 to July 17, will have two productions – The Kooks: Sunny Side-Up And giant table – At the Museum Theater in Egmore.

South Korean production, giant tableis an interactive play that uses media imaging technology to transform an ordinary table into a giant table. The play is suitable for audiences aged six and above.

“Our focus has been to present exceptional performances from Korea in the South Indian circuit, connecting meaningfully with a large network of school children, their parents and teachers,” says Rathi Jaffer, Director, Inco Centre.

Built on the theme of celebrating human imagination and working together, cooks There is a story based on the kitchen. “When we thought about what would bring people together, we realized there’s nothing better than food. And so we set the story in the kitchen,” says KK.

2026 edition of cooks It also marks the directorial debut of Praveen Gunasekaran, who also plays one of the central characters in the drama. The Little Festival, started in 2010 by Ayesha Rau, is an international theater festival for young audiences. “The goal is to bring high-quality productions from around the world to our city, so kids can learn about different cultures and learn to celebrate our differences through stories,” says KK. He further added, “At its core, the idea is to create a feeling of empathy, peace and harmony for our society as a whole through art.”

After the demonstration in Chennai, cooks Will perform in Tamil theater festival named Nadagamik in Salem, Mumbai and Singapore.

With the show traveling to Singapore, it will adapt its minimal verbal format into Tamil and continue to enthrall and entertain the audience with its brilliant physical humour,” says KK.
