Prime Video Series Matka King: ‘Matka King’ is a new crime drama series that released today (April 17) on OTT platform Prime Video. This 8 episode series is based on a true story. If you are planning to watch this series over the weekend, read my review first. I have seen this series and I have mentioned its merits and demerits in 6 points. Don’t worry, this review is spoiler free.
1. How is the story of the series?
The story of Amazon Prime Video’s series ‘Matka King’ is based on true events. Yes, the story is inspired by the life of Indian gambling kingpin and filmmaker Ratan Khatri.
2. Is the story slow or fast?
The story is slow. In many places it seems that we should try to move forward. Somewhere it seems that the story would have been better if it was shown in 6 episodes instead of 8 episodes.
3. ‘Scam 1998’ will be remembered
Watching ‘Matka King’ reminds me of ‘Scam 1998’ again and again. Although both the serials are based on true events, ‘Ghutala 1998’ became popular because the makers did not let the story drag anywhere. Along with this, in ‘Matka King’, sometimes things get predictable.
4. Background music
Background music played a big role in ‘Ghutala 1998’. People were getting interested in the story because of the background music. Its background music is so ingrained in people’s minds that even today they can tell by listening to the background music that it is from ‘Scam 1998’. Along with this, its absence is very much felt in ‘Matka King’.
5. The master stroke
Casting Gulshan Grover in the story is the right decision, but Vijay Verma doesn’t look convincing in Ratan Khatri’s role.

6. To watch or not to watch?
If you like thriller and suspense series then this series is not for you. If you want to watch something to pass the time then you can watch this series. This series is a must watch.
Note: The makers are also going to bring the second season of this series. To make the second season, they have stretched the story longer. If they had ended its story in a single season and paid little attention to the background music, it might have broken the record of ‘Ghutala 1998’.
