Eighty films have been released. Taapsee Pannu is returning to the big screen after a break and that too with director Anubhav Sinha. Anubhav and Taapsee have previously worked in the film ‘Thappad’. The film revolves around Parima (Kani Kusruti) who is a teacher. In the film, she lives in Delhi with her husband. One evening, some young boys kidnap her and sexually assault her. But what happens after that is shown in the police investigation and the court hearing.

From the first frame, Assi grabs your attention, but it’s not easy to watch either. The story of the film reminds every 20 minutes that there has been a rape incident somewhere in the country. The story gets a bit loose from the second half. In trying to cover every possible way society can distance itself from the rape victim, the film begins to slip from its pattern. For example, there is a scene where the school principal (Seema Pahwa) informs Parima that she cannot work as a teacher because the school has good results but the whole school is a failure.
She also says that even the 9th class kids have made fun of her for sexual harassment and hence she cannot be kept in the school.
performance
Talking about the performance, Kani Kusruti has played the role of a rape survivor very well. She neither lets her pitch get too high nor takes it into the realm of exploiting the audience’s emotions.
Taapsee Pannu has given a solid performance as a lawyer. Manoj Pahwa plays the role of the accused’s father and as always he does a great job. Zeeshan Ayub has done a quiet but impressive job as Parima’s husband. Revathi has given a strong performance as a judge.
As a whole
Assi is not a comfortable film, nor does it attempt to be. This causes an injury that cannot be healed and they also want this important and sensitive subject not to be removed from people’s minds.
