According to Variety, Fowler, a longtime fan of the Sonic franchise, revealed that his connection to the ‘Shadow the Hedgehog’ character goes back to his early career.
Before directing the Sonic films, Fowler worked on the 2005 video game ‘Shadow the Hedgehog’, which focused on a darker and more contemplative counterpart of Sonic.
“When I was growing up, I loved Sonic’s attitude and swag,” Fowler recalled, “It was impossible not to fall in love with that guy. When it came to casting Shadow in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’, Fowler knew the character needed a voice that could capture both the intensity and emotional depth of Shadow.
The director said Keanu Reeves, known for his contemplative roles in films like John Wick, is a perfect fit.
According to Variety, “There are obvious parallels between John Wick and the Shadow,” Fowler admitted, adding, “Keanu has always played complex, thoughtful characters with a real edge. He was a perfect fit for the Shadow.”
Another highlight of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ is the return of Jim Carrey as beloved villain Dr. Ivo Robotnik.
However, Carrey’s return was not guaranteed, as the actor had previously stated that he was considering retirement from acting.
For Fowler, reprising the role was never an option, as he believed Carrey’s unique comedic style was irreplaceable.
“In my heart, I felt like if we presented Jim with a fun concept, and if we gave him the right carrot, he would come back,” Fowler continued, adding, “He needs a younger audience.” Love to entertain.”
Carrey’s return became even more fascinating when the filmmakers gave him the opportunity to play not one, but two characters, Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik.
This dual role helped seal the deal, with Carrey agreeing to reprise his iconic role. Carrey himself has mentioned that he was motivated by the prospect of a fun and fulfilling challenge, and, of course, by the pay check.
Looking ahead, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ introduces new characters and sets the stage for more exciting developments in the Sonic Cinematic Universe.
Fowler teased that there are several more directions the franchise could take, with new characters potentially entering the game. Paramount has already begun developing the fourth film, and with the success of Sonic 3, the possibilities seem endless.
“We can expand the world and grow the Sonic family of characters,” Fowler said. He added, “I think we’re hitting our stride.”
This new installment shows a huge commitment to expanding the world of Sonic, bringing in new faces, and maintaining the beloved aspects that made the franchise so popular.
Fans can expect to see the universe evolve in exciting ways, whether through the introduction of new characters or deeper exploration of existing characters.

Fowler and the team took the criticism seriously and worked tirelessly to redesign Sonic to better match the games’ character.
“Fans are passionate about these characters and you have to respect that,” Fowler said. He added, “It comes from a place of love.”
The redesign ultimately paid off and the Sonic films became a massive success. Fowler’s willingness to listen to fans and course-correct is one reason the franchise has connected so strongly with audiences.

Although details are scarce, Fowler has expressed excitement about working on another iconic property. According to Variety, he said, “It’s one of those iconic franchises, which is exciting.”
While ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ is now in theaters and performing well at the box office, Fowler’s future with the franchise remains open.
