Elizabeth Holmes went from being renowned as a visionary entrepreneur to becoming one of Silicon Valley’s most infamous figures. His company Theranos collapsed due to allegations that it misled investors and patients about its technology.
Theranos founder and former CEO Holmes was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison after pleading guilty to defrauding investors. His case has returned to the public’s attention with the upcoming documentary You Can See Everything, which revisits his final period before beginning his sentence.
Holmes became one of the most recognizable names in the technology world after claiming that Theranos could transform healthcare with a device that could run hundreds of medical tests using just a few drops of blood.
However, later investigation revealed that the company’s technology did not work as promised. Prosecutors accused Holmes of misleading investors and patients about the capabilities of Theranos’ blood testing machines.

Why did Elizabeth Holmes go to jail?
Holmes was convicted in January 2022 of four counts of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud against investors who poured millions of dollars into Theranos.
Prosecutors argued that Holmes deliberately exaggerated the company’s technology and business success to attract funding from wealthy investors, including media tycoon Rupert Murdoch and members of the Walton family.
The US Justice Department said Holmes and former Theranos executive Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani misled investors about the company’s ability to perform accurate medical tests.
Holmes maintained that he did not knowingly commit fraud and pleaded not guilty at trial. Her defense argued that she believed in Theranos’s mission and that her former romantic partner and business associate Balwani had influenced the company’s decisions.
A California jury ultimately found Holmes guilty of four charges of investor-related fraud, but acquitted him of several other counts involving patients. He was sentenced in November 2022 and later sent to federal prison in May 2023.
Balwani, who served as Theranos’ president and chief operating officer, pleaded guilty separately to fraud charges and received a prison sentence of nearly 13 years.

The fall of Theranos: Elizabeth Holmes’s billion-dollar company
Holmes founded Theranos in 2003 after dropping out of Stanford University at the age of 19. The company claimed that its Edison device could quickly detect diseases using small blood samples collected through a finger prick.
This promise attracted major investors and influential figures. Holmes appeared on magazine covers and was compared to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs due to her carefully crafted image and ambitious vision.
As of 2014, Theranos was valued at approximately $9 billion, making Holmes the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire.
Dr. Jeffrey Flier, former dean of Harvard Medical School, met her in 2015 and said, “I knew she had this brilliant idea and she had managed to convince all these investors and scientists.”
“She was confident, but when I asked her a lot of questions about her technique, she didn’t seem to understand,” Flier said.
Concerns about Theranos’ key technology, Edison, were raised by a whistleblower in 2015.
The Wall Street Journal published several scathing articles alleging that the company had conducted most of its testing on widely available devices from other manufacturers and that the results were unreliable.
Following the revelations, the business partnership ended and regulators investigated the company. Holmes faced increasing legal pressure. Theranos eventually officially disbanded as Holmes was arrested in 2018.

Nathan Fielder’s Everything You Can See
Holmes’ story has been retold through books, documentaries, and television adaptations, including Hulu’s The Dropout starring Amanda Seyfried.
The latest project, You Can See Everything, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, tells the story of Holmes before he begins his prison sentence. The documentary gained attention after its surprise premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
Holmes’ public persona, her connection to the Theranos crisis, and her reaction to the circumstances that ruined her career are all documented in the 125-minute film.
