“You can’t make Tamil music without Bhartiyar.” This is not a quotation that you hear in the world of trending reels and auto-tune covers every day. But the singer-songman Amrita thanks not only the Bhartiyar-she talks with her, she says.

For his experimental, styling music from his inception as a video jockey (VJ) in Kerala, his journey has always been about exploration. With its new single ‘Atu Nan’ released on 17 April, the spirit of introspection keeps guiding his work.

When asked what the song matters to him, Amrita does not separate her personal life from her music development. “Honestly, I think the two are very interconnected,” she says. “There is a child within everyone. I think I always try to tap the child in a child who is to be balanced and happy while making music. The child within me is curious again.”

Born in Kerala, grew up in Chennai, and now in London, the music of Amrita, usually Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi film music cover, is a mixture of these cultures. She says, “It was never planned. I knew what I did not want, I did not want to chase the songs of the film because this default is a dream. I wanted to make something of my own,” she says.

It is difficult to remember Bharathiyar’s soft dominance in the music of thanks to Amrita. His single ‘Ninnay’ is a clear example. “I think we were all in contact with Bhartiyar, especially if you have learned Karnataka music,” she says.

It is not only his verses, but the way it has been relevant in his subjects that talk to him. “I think Bharathiyar’s poems and love, life and politics are always explained in the mainstream media”

Another striking element in Amrita’s work is how her scenes change the way a listener experiences her music, it is ‘today’s Rat’ or ‘awakened’. “I always try to learn. You know, this is something that I always want to keep in my mind. As I move forward and progress in music, I always want to keep a place to learn more.

I am always under stress. ,

Looking forward, Amrita’s vision is as searching as usual. She is working on new content in English, including an upcoming track Golden boat,

But more than anything, he is excited to deepen his craft. “I want to learn more about music production. Creating my music is very oriented to a singer’s approach. I am still learning it.”

The journey of Amrita Thankai is a reminder that comes from an increase in music, being too keen in life, not from running towards the next goal.
