All the action from the famous Fast & Furious franchise is finally getting closer to being real on television. According to Variety, Peacock has greenlit a new scripted TV series based on the franchise, development of which was first revealed earlier this year.
Fast & Furious TV Spinoff Greenlit
Franchise star Vin Diesel, who shared during a May advance presentation that a Fast & Furious scripted series was in development, will serve as an executive producer alongside Race’s Sam Vincent, Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty, and Jeff Kirshenbaum and Chris Morgan of Chris Morgan Productions.
Additionally, Mike Daniels and Wolf Coleman will serve as co-showrunners, pilot writers and executive producers.
Peacock is hoping to premiere the Fast & Furious series by 2028. It is expected to coincide with the next film installment, Fast Forever, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 17, 2028.
Vin Diesel on expanding the franchise
Earlier in May, Diesel shared, “For the last decade, we’ve felt that fans want more. They’ve wanted us to expand on the legacy characters, their stories. And for the last decade, there’s been a desire that we enter into the TV territory that Fallon has mastered. And I had to wait until it was right… It became right when Donna Langley started envisioning all of this, because that’s when I knew the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, that we felt like The family will be protected… The news I have today is that Peacock is launching four shows from the ‘Fast & Furious’ universe.
Previously in TV, Netflix aired the animated series Fast & Furious Spy Racers for six seasons between 2019 and 2021.
Earlier in August, Vin Diesel shared a major update on the upcoming film installment of the franchise. In an interview with Variety, he revealed that Fast Forever would begin shooting in December.
“If I could do a good job of what the studio requested, we’d start shooting in December. However, I’m in a good place. I had to go through four sets of writers, four years of development, to get something that I felt would be worthy of a finale. And when I read the script a few weeks ago, [I cried],” He said.
According to Variety, inside the screening, Diesel addressed the audience before the lights dimmed and shared more details about how the Fast Forever script brought him to tears.
He said, “I’m going to tell you something personal.” “It was after four different writers, four years of development, and when I read the script, halfway through, a tear. By the end of the script that we crafted and worked so hard to make right for you, four years later, I was crying. I couldn’t stop it, and I had to tell everyone. And my sister said, ‘Don’t cry anymore, brother.’ So I just want to say that sometimes, even the toughest people in the world need to cry.”
Fast Forever – the 11th and final mainline film in the series, will be released in theaters on March 17, 2028. Fast & Furious is Universal’s longest-running franchise and its most profitable, with a combined worldwide gross of $7.3 billion.
