Mirzapur: Film Ever since it premiered in theaters, it has been garnering praise from fans. After the film’s impressive box office run, director Gurmeet Singh spoke about his casting choices, revealing why he cast Vikrant Massey in the role of Bablu Pandit alongside Jitendra Kumar.

During an interview with screenGurmeet Singh shared, “I think the beauty of doing a make-believe world or something creative and imaginative is that as an artist, one always needs options, right? As creators, as actors, what’s the one thing that we all desperately want? It’s to have options and to be able to make those choices. And it’s a good lesson that everyone should be able to follow their heart to tell that.” What they’re not able to do is have a story, a character, a journey tied to no one, and that’s the beauty we can take from it: it’s brought a new energy to the show.

The director shared how the casting change allowed the team to reimagine Bablu Pandit and give him a more prominent role. “It gave it its own life, which is very different from the show, which we always wanted. So it became a blessing in disguise. We were able to reimagine Bablu and give him more agency.”

About the difference between the character the audience saw in the series and what they saw in the film, Gurmeet said, “In the show Bablu was almost helping his brother and being a victim, who never had agency or an agenda of his own. But this Bablu is playing the game. He’s driving the narrative. So, I think that’s a great lesson that we’ve always taken in using your creativity back: to look forward, and film.” Also, I think it opens a lot of doors for us.
