James Cameron’s latest update on Avatar
Discussing his schedule following Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard & Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), James Cameron revealed that he plans to focus on writing as well as developing several new projects behind the scenes. He also confirmed that Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are still in the pipeline. James explained that he is currently working on making the production of future installments of the franchise more efficient, noting that the sheer scale and advanced technology used in the films is “extremely expensive”. He added that the team will likely spend the next year exploring ways to streamline production and reduce costs for upcoming chapters.
He said, “We’re looking at some new technologies to try to do them more efficiently, because they’re extremely expensive and take a lot of time. I’d like to do them in half the time at two-thirds the cost, that’s my metric. And so, it’ll take us a year or more to figure out how to do that. And in the meantime, I’ll write and probably do some other things.”
What James Cameron previously said about the future of Avatar
According to ANI, James Cameron had previously spoken about the uncertainty surrounding the future of the franchise beyond the current planned installments. The filmmaker had stated that if the team ultimately decides not to move forward with additional Avatar films, they will announce the decision via a press conference. However, James also expressed hope that the epic sci-fi saga will continue beyond the current roadmap.
Despite acknowledging the challenges of today’s publishing market, he also expressed interest in novelizing the Avatar films. Noting that “there’s no business model for it anymore”, the filmmaker said he would still like to create novels based on the franchise, explaining that “it might be nice to have the canonical record of what it was all supposed to be.” The director had previously confirmed that some scenes for Avatar 4 have already been filmed. However, he also stressed that the future of any additional installments would ultimately depend on the commercial success of the franchise.
