Rakul Preet Singh has openly revealed about playing the role of Surpankha in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming film. The Ramayana. The actor portrays the mythological character as someone who is often misunderstood and has many layers to his personality.
In a chat with news agency PTI, Rakul spoke about what drew her to the project and why she was excited to be a part of the epic adaptation.
Pritak Ra Singh said, “I think what was so exciting were two things. First, it’s India’s representation to the world. Our history, our truth is presented in the world’s first global film. Second, Surpanakha is a very flawed and layered character. She was the reason the war happened in the first place. So it’s been really interesting to play someone with so many shades.”
Surpankha’s role in the Ramayana is often discussed in connection with the events that eventually led to the war between Lord Rama and Ravana. According to Hindu mythology, she approached Rama and Lakshmana during their exile in the forest. After being insulted and having her nose cut off by Lakshmana, she turns to her brother Ravana for revenge.
His meeting with the brothers eventually sets several events in motion. Ravana later disguises himself as a sage and abducts Sita, leading to a battle.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, The Ramayana Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana.
The film is based on the ancient epic of Valmiki, which holds religious and cultural significance across India. The makers are planning to present the story as a two-part franchise, keeping in mind the global audience.
Reportedly made on a budget of Rs 4,000 crore, the project is backed by Yash and Namit Malhotra. The first installment of The Ramayana is slated to hit theaters on November 5, while the second installment is expected around Diwali 2027.
