The Batman Part 2: Matt Reeves confirms returning cast in Robert Pattinson superhero sequel, everything we know so far

After endless rounds of delays, rumors, and online speculation, filmmaker Matt Reeves has finally begun to reveal what’s going on with The Batman Part II starring Robert Pattinson. And honestly, the sequel already feels bigger, cooler, and far more emotionally complex than the first film.

The filmmaker recently confirmed several returning cast members from 2022’s The Batman, while also teasing new additions to the increasingly chaotic world of Gotham.

Gotham’s familiar faces are officially returning

Matt Reeves recently shared a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that Gotham’s main player will be back alongside Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne. It stars Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb aka Penguin, Jaime Lawson as Mayor Bella Real, and Gil Pérez-Abrahams as Officer Martinez. He wrote, “We will meet again, my friend.”

The announcement hasn’t revealed major plot details yet, but for fans worried about the film’s lengthy development process, it was at least a reassurance that the sequel is finally moving along properly. And Reeves also hinted that more casting announcements will be coming soon.

Harvey Dent’s casting changes everything, according to Sebastian Stan’s report

One of the most talked about updates regarding the sequel is the involvement of Sebastian Stan. After months of speculation linking the actor to Reeves’ Batman universe, Stan has now confirmed that he is part of the project.

Reports suggest that he will play Gotham’s District Attorney Harvey Dent, who eventually becomes the Batman villain Two-Face. And if that casting proves true, it could completely change the emotional core of the sequel.

Speaking to Deadline, Stan described the project as ambitious, while praising Reeves’ approach to filmmaking. He said, “A challenge like everything. I think it’s a really ambitious movie and I think if we get it right – and obviously I’m very excited about Matt Reeves.” [directing] Because that’s been one of my favorites for a long time – I really think it’ll surprise people. “I also think it’s going to surprise a lot of people.”

Is Two-Face already arriving?

This is still unclear. Reeves hasn’t officially confirmed who exactly the sequel’s main villain is, and there’s a strong possibility that the film may slowly build up to Harvey Dent’s downfall rather than jumping straight into full-on Two-Face territory. Honestly, this approach would make sense for Reeves. His version of Gotham seems to be based on emotional realism, where people gradually unravel rather than change overnight.

There are also growing rumors that Scarlett Johansson may appear as Harvey’s wife Gilda Dent, although this casting is as of yet unconfirmed.

Meanwhile, reports have linked Charles Dance to a major role, possibly as Harvey Dent’s father. If this is true, the sequel could explore Dent’s psychological decline through family trauma rather than treating him like a standard comic-book villain.

Icy Gotham footage leaves fans convinced there’s Mr. Freeze

One small piece of footage completely changed the internet’s mood around the sequel. Recently, Reeves shared early camera test shots, which show the Batmobile driving through a heavy snowfall with snow tires on. This was enough to send Batman fans into instant theory mode.

Because naturally, the first name everyone jumped at was Mr. Freeze. Fans have spent years wondering if Reeves could realistically adapt the iconic villain into his own darker Gotham universe. And honestly, the deadline is on the line. Reeves has previously spoken about his desire to explore a grounded version of Mister Freeze inspired by the beloved Heart of Ice story from Batman: The Animated Series.

Also, the freezing setting may not necessarily indicate a freeze. Gotham itself is still recovering from the devastating flood that destroyed parts of the city at the end of the first film. The winter atmosphere may reflect a colder, more broken Gotham emotionally and politically.

The Penguin and the Joker probably aren’t done yet

One thing that seems almost certain is that he will play a huge role for the Penguins moving forward. Following the success of HBO’s The Penguin, Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb is expected to emerge as one of Gotham’s most dangerous power players. The city’s criminal void has widened even further since the death of Carmine Falcone, and the Penguin is ready to take advantage of it.

There is also growing hope that Barry Keoghan’s Joker will return in some form following his brief appearance in the first film and the deleted Arkham sequence. But, there is also speculation that Joker may remain more of a background presence rather than becoming the main antagonist of the sequel.

Gotham’s corruption may run even deeper

If the first film explored corruption at the street level, the sequel already feels like it’s delving deeper into Gotham’s institutional rot.

Fans have begun to speculate about stories involving the Court of Owls, Gotham’s elite power structure, and Harvey Dent’s complicated rise inside the city’s legal system. All of this fits naturally into Reeves’ noir-inspired world, which has always leaned more toward spy fantasy than superhero spectacle.

The production of the film is expected to begin soon in London, while the sequel is scheduled to release on October 1, 2027, almost five years after the release of the first part.
