Randolph Mantooth, the actor who became a television icon as paramedic John Gage on NBC’s Emergency, has died at the age of 80. According to his brother, he died on July 9 in a hospice in Ventura, California, after a long illness.
Mantooth was diagnosed with cancer in 2015.
Mantooth became a household name in 1972 when he was cast opposite Kevin Tighe in Emergency! The NBC drama ran for six seasons and was based on the lives of Los Angeles County paramedics. Social media users have credited the series with introducing millions of Americans to the relatively new profession of paramedicine.
Mantooth performed many of his own stunts and remained closely involved with firefighters, EMTs and paramedics long after the show ended.

Randolph Mantooth is survived by his wife, Kristen Mantooth. According to reports, the couple remained together till his death. He is also survived by his siblings Donald and Tonya.

Mantooth’s father was Seminole and Cherokee and he was born in Sacramento. After attending Santa Barbara City College, she was awarded a scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mantooth died while in hospital care after a long illness. He publicly revealed his cancer diagnosis in 2015 but reportedly recovered.

Mantooth then went back to “Loving” for two more years. He also made appearances on soap operas such as “The City,” “As the World Turns,” and “One Life to Live,” as well as television programs such as “Criminal Minds,” “Ghost Whisperer,” and “Sons of Anarchy.”
Throughout his career, Mantooth became an outspoken advocate for first responders. He frequently attended firefighting conferences, supported EMS education programs and worked with public safety organizations that recognized his contributions to raising awareness of emergency medicine through television.
