just one night review
Artists: Callum Turner, Monica Barbero, Maya Hawke, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton.
Director: Will Gluck
Rating: ★★★
We usually want our rom-coms to end smoothly, but one night only Takes a huge, delightfully strange turn. Director Will Gluck has spent years proving he knows how to give the genre a fun, modern take — whether it’s through Emma Stone’s razor-sharp wit easy a or sheer, undeniable heat Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in Any Bird But You. However, this time he is taking the winning formula elsewhere. Just imagine dystopian chaos The PurgeBut instead of 12 hours of free rein to commit murder, a strict government allows everyone a wild night of legal premarital sex. It’s a completely chaotic setup, but you have to admit: it’s an absolute goldmine for messy romance, biting satire, and some serious laughs.
plot of the film
The film is set in New York City, where sex between unmarried couples has been illegal for the past three years. There is only one exception – an annual 12-hour window called “One Night Only”, when the law is put on hold. Owen (Callum Turner, a pizzeria owner in upper Manhattan, plans to spend the night with his girlfriend Malika (Maya Hawke). But things take an unexpected turn when Malika suggests they open up their relationship for the night, leaving Owen unsure how to deal with the chaos that follows.
As New York embraces its one night of freedom, Owen finds himself repeatedly crossing paths with Ellie (Monica Barbero), an aspiring singer who pays her bills by recording ridiculous pharmaceutical jingles. She’s also there looking for someone and is hoping that something meaningful happens by the end of the 24 hours. What starts as a series of random encounters slowly evolves into something more real. Amidst a town full of people looking for a one-night stand, Owen and Ellie begin to wonder if they may have found something that can last all night.

This movie is an undisputed lifesaver. callum turner And Monica Barbaro. Callum gifts Owen with an easy-going, reserved charm that instantly draws you in. He’s completely out of his depth, amazingly awkward, and brilliantly unprepared for the city-wide madness around him. He quietly taps into the humor of a man who is nervous, who knows how to make those moments funny without resorting to cartoonish slapstick.
Monica as Ellie matches him in every way. She brings a fiery, slightly prickly energy to the screen that feels incredibly real. His comedic timing is extremely sharp, and if you don’t find yourself laughing as he sings those extremely unflattering pharmaceutical jingles, you may need to check your pulse. Those are easily the standout moments of the film.
Ultimately, though, it’s the spontaneous spark between Monica and Callum that holds the whole thing together. Even when the script starts to derail and lose its excitement, you stick around only because these two are so charming that you care about how their night ends.
what works
The film really takes off when it stops trying to explain itself and embraces the absolute insanity of its premise. Honestly, it’s incredibly funny to see ordinary people treating a bizarre, dystopian government order as if it’s just another annoying Tuesday. Everyone is casually planning around the impending chaos, and that acceptance is where the comedy really shines.
Then there’s New York City, which practically serves as the film’s third lead. The scorching summer streets and that distinct, electric NYC energy give the film that classic, breezy rom-com vibe you’re paying for. The script includes sharp-tongued humor, sharp pop-culture jokes and some truly surprising celebrity cameos that really add to the entertainment without taking the focus away from the lead pair. If you’re paying attention, there are plenty of clever little Easter eggs to catch, too.
The pace in the first half is relentless in the best way possible. You’re just bouncing from one ridiculous, chaotic scenario to the next, not engaging with anything. Plus, amidst all the manic comedy, the film really takes a breather capturing some truly gorgeous, love-letter-style scenes of the city.
what doesn’t work
The biggest disappointment is how the film completely fails its own wild premise. When you introduce a system where the government literally polices people’s sex lives, you expect Some? A type of biting satire about bodily autonomy, freedom, or control. Instead, the script simply mandates easy punchlines and refuses to delve deeper.
Then comes the pace, which really goes off the rails. The movie starts out of the gate with this fun, chaotic, sexually charged energy, but once the actual story unfolds, it hits a wall. The momentum is completely lost due to some meaningless twists, but the most disturbing issue is the drastic change in tone. It’s almost as if the film suddenly becomes embarrassed by its own edginess.
decision
Look, if you start pulling the threads of logic one night onlyThe whole thing gets revealed. This is a film that bites off more than it can chew, but it’s saved by its infectious energy and pair of genuinely likable heroes. It’s the cinematic equivalent of a summer fling – it won’t change your life, and you probably won’t remember it for years, but it’s an extremely entertaining way to spend a night in with your friends who only like rom-coms. If you’re just looking for a good time watching movies, a date night is easily suitable.
