He added, “I went to see it. There weren’t many people in the theatre, yes, but the feeling I got after watching the film made me call Imtiaz. When I was watching it, I could see that people were emotionally attached to it. The film grossed around Rs 90 lakh or more, and it grossed over Rs 65 crore.”
On box office trends, audience expectations and ‘star power’
There is much debate about whether star power alone can guarantee box-office success these days.
Some recent releases, like Priyadarshan’s animal, Which is led by Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar, and Meghna Gulzar range, Headlined by Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, it failed to fetch the expected numbers.
Meanwhile, like a small budget film Hanuman Part Grown behind strong word of mouth and increasing social media momentum. The film has earned more than 400 crore rupees worldwide.
So where does Star Power stand today? Is it enough to drive audiences to theaters?
Vishal Bhardwaj said, “I find it very encouraging and heartwarming. I’m not talking about the two films you mentioned, Dayra and Havan, because I haven’t seen them. I don’t know why they didn’t do at the box office, so I don’t have an opinion on that. But one thing I feel is that if the film works at the box office, it’s good.”
“I think it’s a very good sign. The minimum guarantee of stars is going down, which I think is good in a way. Look at Havan’s collection; it made almost six and a half crores at the box office. I’m a fan of Priyadarshan, I’m a fan and a friend. I really wanted the film to do well. But I still added something to watch it,” Vihal said. Bhardwaj
The eminent filmmaker concluded by offering a powerful idea: stars should be aware of the cost of film production, ensure that they are supporting a good film, and share the burden of producers. Producers should not be the only ones losing money.
Talking about unexpected miracles and good films at the box office, Vishal Bhardwaj smiles, “These are good times. I mean, good times are coming.”
