Devolina Bhattacharjee has questioned why celebrating Karva Chauth has become a topic of debate, especially when the decision to celebrate the festival is entirely personal. Calling it a way for couples to express their love, the TV actor said people should be allowed to follow traditions that make them happy instead of facing criticism for their choice.
Devolina shared her thoughts in a long post on X on Thursday, October 29, wishing women celebrating Karva Chauth. He said that although he has never fasted, he has no objection against those who do. In fact, she admitted she would like to experience the festival herself one day.
Explaining why she did not fast till now, Devolina said that Karva Chauth is not traditionally celebrated in Bengali and Assamese households. However, he added that not following a particular ritual does not mean that people cannot adopt the traditions of other cultures.
“I have never fasted on Karva Chauth because, in Bengali and Assamese cultures, it is not a tradition. We cannot have every ritual, but we celebrate many festivals wholeheartedly. So why not Karva Chauth? Honestly, I intend to do it someday. But I am afraid that I will not be able to fast without water every day and on Mondays! That is a different story,” ex Big Boss Contestant wrote.
The actor also explained how the festival has become a way for couples to celebrate their relationship, especially as many husbands choose to fast with their wives. He questioned why those who do not believe in the tradition feel the need to criticize those who enjoy celebrating it.
“I really feel that for many couples, it’s a love language. I’ve seen women celebrate it with joy, and today, many husbands fast with their wives. So why bring feminism, patriarchy, and judgment into someone else’s celebration? You don’t believe in it? Don’t celebrate it. No one is judging you, but why is a mother fasting for the happiness of her children? Family, so if one day one of their own If the husband wants to fast, then why is it a problem as long as it is a personal choice and no one is forced to do it, let people celebrate love of their own free will.
He contrasted the criticism of Karva Chauth fasting with other lifestyle choices, including dieting, keto and intermittent fasting. According to her, people voluntarily change their routines for personal reasons, so fasting for a partner should not automatically invite questions about gender roles.
Devolina also revealed that her husband, fitness trainer Shanwaz Shaikh, asks her every year if she is planning to celebrate Karva Chauth. However, he will have to wait a little longer before experiencing the festival.
Happy Karva Chauth to all the beautiful women celebrating today! ❤️🌙 I have never fasted on Karva Chauth because, in Bengali and Assamese cultures, it is not a tradition. We may not have every ritual, but we celebrate many festivals wholeheartedly. So why not Karva Chauth? Honestly, I feel like keeping it someday. But I’m afraid I won’t be able to last a whole day without water! ??? I fast every Monday and sometimes Ekadashi, but water fast? This is a different story! But that’s not even the point. I really feel that for many couples, it is the language of love. I have seen women celebrate it with joy, and today, many husbands fast with their wives. So why bring feminism, patriarchy and judgment into someone else’s celebration? Don’t you believe in it? Don’t celebrate it. No one is judging you. But why spoil someone else’s happiness? Mothers fast for their children, for their family. So if one wants to fast one day for her husband, why should this be a problem? As long as it is a personal choice and no one is forced into it, let people celebrate love however they want. And a little personal note: Shaan comes from a Muslim family, yet every Karva Chauth, he asks me, “Tum rakhogi kya wart?” And every year, I say with a heavy heart, “Look, next year.” ❤️ I’m still breastfeeding, so hopefully next year! 🧿 Because honestly, husbands deserve to feel special and loved too, don’t they? We do intermittent fasting, try keto and follow all kinds of diets for ourselves. But when it comes to fasting for a husband, suddenly everything becomes about patriarchy and feminism? Ladies, chill a little! ❤️ Love is personal. Traditions are personal. Celebrations are personal. Let people choose what makes them happy. Happy Karva Chauth to all! May your love always be strong. ❤️❤️
