Aamir Khan’s niece Zayn Mary has shared pictures of the bruises on her body after she was detained by the Mumbai police during a protest in the city on Saturday.
The actor posted a new Instagram reel on Sunday, showing the marks on his arm, fingers and legs, and talked about the fear in a message accompanying the video.
“Don’t scare us until there’s no fear at first,” Zayn said, looking directly into the camera. “She exposes (Raj) on the internet,” she captioned the post.
Zain had earlier shared a video documenting his detention with actors Imran Khan and Lekha Washington on Instagram. The three were detained while participating in a demonstration at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan.
Videos and pictures of the incident surfaced on Saturday afternoon, showing Imran, Lekha and Zain being taken away in a police van.
Imran, Lekha and Zain were released after a few hours. After his release, the actor took to social media to share updates about the incident and recount his experiences with the police.
Imran Khan, Lekha Washington and Zayn Marie share post-release updates
Lekha Washington took to Instagram on Saturday night to share a reel confirming that she is safe after being released. In a subsequent Instagram story, she was seen hugging Imran Khan and Zayn after the trio returned home.
However, Lekha also claimed that her problems continued even after her release. In an earlier reel, he said he was unable to book a cab back home because the Mumbai police were allegedly threatening drivers who agreed to take them.
Zane Marie also documented her detention through a series of Instagram Stories. He reposted the footage showing the actors being taken away in a police van, allegedly without informing them of their destination.
In another video recorded inside the vehicle, she is heard shouting slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah while demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar. After this, some passers-by also joined in shouting slogans.
In another Instagram story, Zayn recounted what happened after arriving at the Yellow Gate police station. He claimed that when the trio asked the authorities why they had been detained, they did not get a clear explanation. The actors eventually decided to leave the police station but were allegedly followed by an officer.
Explaining the situation, Zain said, “I was asking him why we were detained, but he doesn’t have a clue either. He just says ‘two minutes,’ and then goes on the phone for hours,” she said, shrugging her shoulder.
Videos shared by other protesters also show Imran speaking about the incident. In one of the clips, he claimed that he, Lekha and Zain were rounded up in a police van for a couple of hours without being given any reason for their detention.
Another video shows Imran and Zain interrogating police officers as to why they were detained. When the officers left without replying, Imran shouted “Jai Hind!” said goodbye
Imran Khan recreated the Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na quote inside the police van
Amidst the tense situation, Zayn shared a light-hearted video in which Imran is seen inside a police van. The clip referenced the actor’s 2008 debut film, Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Naa, directed by Abbas Tyrewala.
In the cult romantic comedy, Emraan played Jai Rathore, a non-violent youth from a warrior family in Rajasthan. His character has to fulfill three conditions – riding a horse, going to jail and beating someone – to earn the title of a true “Ranjore Da Rathore”.
While recalling the scenes of the film, Zain asked Imran if he had ever ridden a horse, gone to jail or beaten anyone. Imran smiles and replies that he has ridden a horse but never attacked anyone in real life. He also expressed uncertainty about whether his detention would lead to jail time.
“Maybe (it’s possible),” he said.
Imran also grabbed the attention of social media users by posting a picture of himself inside a police van on Instagram. “Apparently I’m going for a drive,” the actor captioned the pic.
Zayn later reposted a fan-made meme featuring the photo with Imran’s popular dance track Dhat Teri Ki Main Ghar Nahi Jaana from Puneet Malhotra’s 2013 romantic comedy Gori Tere Pyaar Mein.
Why were Imran Khan and other protesters detained?
The detention came amid protests organized by the Cockroach Janata Party, whose members were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
The controversy gained widespread attention following an investigation into the revisionist practice. Protests were held in several parts of the country, including Mumbai and Delhi, as protesters demanded accountability for alleged irregularities.
Mumbai Police said that permission was not sought for the gathering at August Kranti Maidan. The CJP workers, however, claimed that they had emailed the authorities seeking permission but had not received a response.
The police action has also extended outside Mumbai. In Delhi, more than 4,000 protesters were detained across the capital, mainly in areas around Jantar Mantar, the designated protest site. Several CJP leaders and prominent opposition leaders were also detained before they gathered at the venue.
