Earlier this year, Kriti Sanon found herself at the center of controversies after she appeared in jewelery brand GIVA’s Raksha Bandhan ad campaign. She was trolled a lot for her beautiful attire. The plunging neckline of the dress was heavily criticized, with some claiming it disrespected the traditional sanctity of the Raksha Bandhan festival. Months later, Kriti Sanon has once again addressed Kareena Kapoor Khan’s reaction in Episode 2. What women want Season 6.
She spoke about how the issue was bigger than her and also revealed that trolls made nasty comments on her mother and sister’s posts.
Kriti Sanon said, “Normally, I don’t say anything… I felt it (the Rakhi ad controversy) wasn’t about me, it was a bigger issue where I feel women are under constant scrutiny for everything. It’s just women who get targeted for the smallest thing. What do you want to wear, is she too short or tall, oh, is she following my opinion?”
She added, “What’s up with the hate? I don’t read the comments under the posts… But I think sometimes people are so mean. It’s ironic that people who talk about culture and respect, who have commented on my parents and sister’s posts in the most vile, insulting language, what have they done? My sister said I should stop my comments and I asked, why did I call myself a woman?” Did you think it was necessary to stand up? Have these people been given the right to comment, and for what?”
“Actors are the easiest targets. It’s happened to a lot of people, and we’re only human, and it affects us too. I feel very strongly about the gender inequality that exists, and the patriarchy that is so deeply ingrained. We need to break it many times to break it,” concluded the actor.
What was the dispute about?
In the jewelery ad, Kriti Sanon is seen celebrating Raksha Bandhan while wearing a burlet-style blouse with a cape and a draped skirt, an outfit that did not sit well with a section of social media users.
Kangana Ranaut has hit back at Kriti Sanon’s Rakhi ad campaign, with the actress facing criticism on social media for her choice of clothes. “Why would you tie a rakhi to your brother wearing a bikini or undergarments?” Kangana asked, calling the campaign “deliberately scary”.
In response, Kriti shared a long note, writing, “Imagine being upset by what another woman chooses to wear. With respect, grow up. PS: I’m the one who wears the rakhi, and if I don’t have a problem with it, why should you? The essence of festivals is not in the clothes you wear; it’s connected to your emotions and adds to the tradition.”
On the occasion of Rakhi, the actress took to Instagram and took a subtle dig at the moral policing going on around the “right” outfit for Rakhi.
Sharing a picture of them holding hands with younger sister Nupur Sanon and tying Rakhi on each other’s wrists, Kriti wrote, “While the Rakhi fashion committee is in session. We are focusing on what really matters. Happy Rakhi everyone.”
Kriti Sanon was last seen Cocktail 2.
