Nitesh Tiwari’s much-awaited project RamayanaFeaturing Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles, it is one of the most eagerly awaited films of the moment. The actors are touring various cities and promoting the film, creating buzz ahead of its Diwali weekend release.
The film’s director of photography Pankaj Kumar has now detailed how he executed the project’s most challenging sequences. In an exclusive interview with Variety IndiaHe revealed the kind of intricate camera movements and technology involved in bringing some of the film’s scenes to life.
Pankaj said, “One shot involved a camera moving fast from a great height before getting very close to the actor, while the camera operator had to go with it and detach the gimbal from the techno crane and run along the roundabout and get very close to the actor.” It was a very tricky shot.
The sequence also required extensive rehearsals before achieving the exact pace the team had planned. “It took us about 50 rehearsals to get it the way we pre-visualized it,” he said.
The film features several other sequences involving elaborate camera movements, including shots where the camera travels long distances before closing in on the actor. Since these movements were not going in a straight line, even the cable camera rig required careful planning and execution.
“There are so many exciting scenes like this,” he added, crediting the team behind the film for bringing the ambitious shots together. He also said that working on the project exposed him to equipment and technology he wouldn’t normally work with.
“Because of its big budget, it gave us resources that are out of reach for most films,” he said, highlighting how the scale of the production allowed the team to experiment with more advanced filmmaking technology.
