Kunal Khemu and Soha Ali Khan have often kept their personal lives out of the limelight, but an old conversation from 2012 reveals how the actor-director was introduced to the Pataudi family.
Soha said that she did not think it was right to tell her father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi directly about Kunal. Instead, she relied on her mother, veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, to communicate.
Soha also recalled that her mother met Kunal for the first time on the sets of his film 99. At that time, Kunal was shooting a scene in a bathrobe.
In previous conversations with Hindustan TimesSoha Ali Khan said, “I would never tell my father directly because we didn’t have a discussion about boys. I trusted my mother to tell him.
“I must have told her and she is very generous and trusts my choices and is not at all worried. She met Kunal on the sets of 99 and unfortunately he was doing a scene where he had to wear a white bathrobe.”
Sharmila Tagore liked Kunal Khemu from the beginning and soon became comfortable with him. He also got along well with her. When Sharmila first met Kunal, she didn’t think they would become friends. There was also a funny moment when she tried to cook for him but had to ask him how to turn on the gas first.
It was also a new experience for Kunal to tell his parents about Soha Ali Khan. He first spoke to his father and later told his mother. By then Kunal and Soha had been together for about eight or nine months. Kunal decided to tell his parents as rumors of their relationship started circulating in the media.
Her parents asked her about the reports before, but she denied them because the relationship was not official at the time. As more reports surfaced, she thought it best to tell her family the truth.
She said the conversation was normal, but her parents, especially her father, were a little uncomfortable. This was the first time Kunal had told them that he was in a relationship with a woman.
