Filmmaker Mathimaran Pugazhendhi is riding high after the blockbuster success of his latest offering, Retardation. The Tamil catamaran racing drama stars Suri in the lead role alongside Telugu actor Suhas. Although the film is doing very well at the box office, many people are unaware that Suhas faced racist comments from people back home before the production of the film. Retardation.
Speaking at the film’s success meet on Thursday, the director recalled how the criticisms during the shoot deeply affected Suhas and how he made a personal promise to address them publicly once the film was proven.
“During the shoot, Suhas was feeling very bad about his color and the racist comments from home. I told him that we will answer them at the stage of our success,” said Mathimaran.
Addressing those who made these comments, the director added, “I don’t know who made these comments, but to answer, we in Tamil Nadu do not discriminate against our actors based on their colour. You can watch the film and call him back.”
“Here in Tamil Nadu, every household now knows Suhas. His character, Sattapuli, is a feeling. I made a promise to Suhas, and I think I fulfilled it,” he concluded.

Set in the coastal fishing communities of Tamil Nadu, the Mathimaran Pugazhendhi directorial follows the rivalry between two teams in a traditional catamaran race. The sports-action drama follows Suhas and Suri, who start on the same team but go their separate ways, only to reunite for another run.
Suri headlines the film as Mandadi, with Suhas as his antagonist Sattapuli. Mahima Nambiar plays the lead role and Sathyaraj, Mithun Jai Shankar, Ravindra Vijay, Bala Saravanan, and Sutan Siva, among others, play pivotal roles.

On its eighth day, Mandadi collected Rs 3.25 crore nett from 3,524 shows in India. This takes its All India total to Rs 67.03 crore and All India total to Rs 57.30 crore. Overseas, the film collected Rs 1 crore on day 8, taking its total overseas earnings to Rs 12.90 crore. The worldwide total now stands at Rs 79.93 crore, according to industry tracker Secnilak.
