Tigmanshu Dhulia, known for making films and series rooted in crime, politics and society, reveals why he doesn’t see himself making conventional love stories. He shared that there are “much more interesting subjects” for him to explore as a filmmaker. Director Paan Singh Tomar said he doesn’t see the appeal in focusing only on the relationship of two people unless the story explores a larger conflict.

Asked if he would ever make an urban love story, Tigmanshu told Hindustan Times, “Absolutely not,” adding, “It’s because there are more interesting subjects than love stories. I don’t watch love stories.”

He added, “Duniya Mein is such a problem going on, and well, the film shouldn’t come across as a newspaper, it should be interesting and entertaining but if so many things are happening, why should I be interested in someone’s love story? It’s happening between two people.

However, Tigmanshu said he would consider a love story if it is set against a wider social, cultural or historical background. He said, “Making a film is not worthwhile unless it is a love story like Mughal-e-Azam or Ek Duje Ke Leya, where there is a language or cultural clash. I cannot comment on love stories today because I don’t watch them,” he shared.

With experience as both a director and actor, Tigmanshu Dhulia said he sees directing as his main calling. “I started as a director, so that’s my job. Acting is a luxury,” he said.

The filmmaker recalled that he once felt that he was not cut out for acting despite graduating from the National School of Drama. “I majored in acting but I didn’t pursue it because I thought I was a very bad actor, and I am,” Tigmanshu said.

Her acting career took a sudden turn when Anurag Kashyap offered her a role Gangs of Wasseypur. “I didn’t think much and said yes and didn’t realize how big the role was. When they came to me for prosthetics and the shoot was to start in 20 days, it hit me that I had signed up for it. I hadn’t acted before but the confidence came because I knew everyone on the sets of Gangs of Kannoh’s Gaon Diya.” concluded

A new film directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia ghamasanDaku is inspired by Dadua’s life. Starring Prateek Gandhi and Arshad Warsi, the film premiered on ZEE5 on 11 September.
