A Surat city court on Monday issued a bailable warrant against filmmaker-actor Anurag Kashyap. The warrant has been issued for his failure to appear before the court in a case related to his alleged objectionable comments against the Brahmin community on social media last year. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate J.V. Chauhan issued this bailable warrant against Anurag and fixed the next hearing of the case for December 24. The order came after the 54-year-old filmmaker, known for directing acclaimed Hindi films like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and ‘Black Friday’. Despite summons being issued by the court, he did not appear in the court.
Surat court’s big action against Anurag Kashyap
In May, the court had directed to register a case against Anurag Kashyap under sections 192 (promoting enmity between different groups), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 352 (2) (spreading false rumours) of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) on a plea by lawyer Kamlesh Rawal (who is the legal advisor to Hindutva organizations Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad). As part of the judicial proceedings, the court had issued summons to Kashyap, but he did not appear in the court. Advocate Rawal said that when he did not appear on Monday also, the court issued a bailable warrant against him.
Bailable warrant issued in the name of Anurag Kashyap
Under a bailable warrant, the accused person can get released by depositing the bail amount fixed by the court. Kamlesh Rawal said in the statement, ‘We initially filed an application and sought his presence (in the court) for verification, but he did not appear. After this the trial court started proceedings against him. Then a summons was issued, but still he did not appear. The court directed that a public summons be published in the newspaper. We arranged for it to be published in a leading newspaper (Mumbai edition), but still he did not appear.
Anurag Kashyap had to face heavy punishment for making ‘anti-Brahmin’ remarks.
The petitioner had sought legal action against the remarks by seeking a bailable warrant on April 16, 2025. Anurag Kashyap had ‘posted an objectionable message on social media (X), which tarnished the image of the entire Brahmin community.’ In his petition, the petitioner said that when a person named Aditya raised objection to Kashyap’s post, the filmmaker responded angrily by abusing him and asking, ‘What have you achieved by becoming a Brahmin?’
Questions raised on Anurag Kashyap’s mentality
Kamlesh Rawal claimed that by making such comments, Anurag Kashyap has ‘tried to humiliate the Brahmin community and this post is an insult to the entire Brahmin community.’ He argued that this statement of the accused created a danger of increasing enmity between different religious and ethnic groups across the country. The accused is an actor, director and producer, whose films impact people of all ages. According to the petitioner, his subsequent social media posts reveal his mentality; He tried to disturb the peaceful atmosphere and tried to defame the entire Brahmin community.
Kamlesh Rawal made a big claim
Rawal claimed that this tweet by Anurag Kashyap was in response to the objections raised by two organizations named ‘All India Brahmin Samaj’ and ‘Vipra Sena’ on the trailer of Hindi film ‘Phule’. ‘The statements of the accused have defamed the entire Brahmin community and promoted enmity between different communities in India. These steps of his are an attempt to break the national unity of India and disturb peace and harmony.
Anurag Kashyap had apologized to the Brahmin community
Days after his comments sparked controversy, Anurag Kashyap apologized to the Brahmin community. He said that while replying to someone in anger, he had crossed the limits of decorum by using ‘abusive language’. “I sincerely apologize to this community,” the filmmaker said in a statement released on Instagram in April 2025. I didn’t want to say anything like this, but I wrote it in anger while replying to someone’s nasty comment. I apologize to all my friends, my family and the (Brahmin) community for the way I spoke and the use of abusive language.
