Priyanka Chopra remembers mother Madhu Chopra’s strong reaction after Delhi cab took a wrong turn late at night: ‘She grabbed the driver by the throat…slapped him’

Los Angeles: Parents can go to any extent to protect their children and Priyanka Chopra’s character of Bloody Mary in the upcoming film ‘The Bluff’ reflects this well, showing that she will fight against all odds for her son and family.

Priyanka is associated with this role on a personal level. Being a daughter and mother, she understands well the bond between parent and child.

In a latest interview with ANI, speaking about the unparalleled courage of mothers for their children, she recalled a childhood memory when her mother Madhu Chopra bravely confronted a driver who took an unfamiliar turn on a Delhi road late at night.

“I remember once when we were in the cab she came out of a Bloody Mary, I must have been 11 or something…we were going to some hotel in Delhi at night…we were driving and suddenly, I don’t know, I saw my mother holding the driver by the throat. And apparently he took a turn that she didn’t recognize and she said, ‘No, no I’m taking a short cut’…it was 11 o’clock at night mummy And I was alone, but he held his neck from behind and told him to go back to the main road,” Priyanka vividly remembered.

She added, “And she slapped her…she said, go back to the main road. She was saying, ‘I’m here with my teenage daughter’…I had never seen that side of my mother. After that for the next four months I never argued with her on anything. I don’t know if my mother would have reacted that way if she had been alone. But because I was with her, she was trembling when we came back to the hotel.”

Apart from this incident, Priyanka also shared how her experiences as a mother shaped her approach for the role of Bloody Mary in Prime Video’s ‘The Bluff’.

“When you are going on a journey with a hero it is very important to understand why they are doing what they are doing…four goons are standing there you keep killing…it is not interesting but when you have the reason it becomes interesting. So for me it really matters how far a mother can go to protect her child. I had recently had my daughter, she was two years old when I started shooting for the film and if someone came after her I would break down. Dungi na us insaan ko…woh jo feeling hoti aur gussa hota woh ek mata patina ko maloom hota (If someone had come after that, I would not have left that person. That feeling of anger, that protective instinct, is something that every parent understands),” Priyanka shared.

In every scene, she imagined what she would do to protect her daughter Malti and her family.

“And in every scene I kept thinking what would I do to make sure that my child, my family is safe. And you know, that’s why Mary’s character, she is serious. She plays dirty. She will hit you out of nowhere. She will make sure that her family is safe and that’s why you feel like she is violent and dirty and she has no apology because you are coming after my child. And that’s a universal feeling,” Priyanka stressed.

‘The Bluff’ directed by Frank E. Flowers will arrive on Prime Video on February 25.

In the film, Priyanka will be seen doing high-octane action scenes with swords and guns against Karl Urban.

Talking about her preparation, the ‘Citadel’ star shared, “You know how much skill it requires, I have never worked with swords before. The only other film I did was Bajirao Mastani. But I was playing the Peshwa’s wife in it, so I didn’t have any action or stunts in that film. So I had to learn to work with blades and that too with both hands. Whereas to be able to fight someone with Carl’s expertise was a lot of films. They did it in Lord of the Rings before they did it in .

Priyanka recalled, “So I wanted to make sure I knew my job as well. So it took weeks of learning how to train, how to work with the different types of rifles of that time, loading ammo. And when you’re doing a big action sequence, doing that in the middle of a scene required a lot of details, which is challenging and fun at the same time.”
