the film paritchaikkku neramachuEnded in a devastating tragedy. Varadu Kutty, the lovable duffer, who is Sivaji’s biological son, dies in a road accident, and his foster son, Anand, also dies. uaa game Varadu Kutty- Paritchikku Neramaachu 2 (Story- G. Radhakrishnan; Original Idea- Sureshwar; Direction- Y.G. Mahendra) starts from where the film ended.

Y.G. Mahendra reprized the role of Varadu Kutty, which he played in the film. Varadu’s agitated spirit did not leave the earth, as he died before he could fulfill his father’s ambition of making his son pass the public service examination. Therefore, the spirit of Varadu now wants to help an average student perform well in his board examinations.

Devaram (Karthik Aridhara) fits into this role, as he has failed the Plus Two exam thrice. Varadu explains how he himself suddenly became smart – during one of his trips to the realm of spirits, he met the mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, and managed to absorb his genius. Therefore, Varadu, equipped with his new abilities, becomes Devaram’s teacher. Of course, no one can see him except Devaram.

Although there was ample scope for humor in this premise, the play could not take full advantage of it, as most of these scenes remained dull.

The character of Chinu (Sureshwar) as Devaram’s always drunk brother-in-law had no relevance to the story and tested one’s patience. The transition from one scene to the next was not seamless, creating a choppy effect. A more focused script would have helped.

The opening song (music V. Balasubramaniam; singer Ritwik) was catchy. The politically motivated dialogue and Vardu’s sharp wit was a hit with the audience. Recalling his romantic salad days, his father’s plans for his future and the occasional air of mock seriousness when he delivered his sarcastic presentations, Y. Yes. Mahendra’s performance was lively and engaging. Finally there was a twist in the story, which till then was at the expected level. Kartik Aridhara is an actor to watch out for. Was ‘Varadu Kutty’ successful? Yes, but only just.
