In an exclusive chat with NDTV, director Karan D Kapadia explains why he wanted Aneet to play the iconic Menu Rawat, and how he prepared for the role. Kapadia also answered a question on whether he would call himself Aneet’s ‘mentor’.
‘It was no brainer we needed him’
Karan and Nitya were clear that they needed Aneet for the role of Meen Rawat, who files a sexual assault case against the dangerous and powerful god Bapji (played by Raghubir Yadav).
Citing the reasons for choosing Aneet, Karan told us, “Aneet was great. Big girls don’t cry. He was someone who immediately resonated with us. He also did a short film with Nitya Sour sweet memory which has been released on the OTT platform Waves. So, we are well aware of his talent. We collaborated very closely with him on these two shows. For us, it was a no-brainer that we needed him for this role. We were confident that Aneet had the ability to play such a complex role, the ability to explore the inner battle and strife of a survivor of such a heinous crime, the seriousness and emotional intelligence to play the character, the youthful innocence behind it – the quality to bring out the burning fire and desire that an entire generation possesses. And that’s the quality we’ve tapped into. “
Aneet did a workshop for the role
Pride is speaking to a survivor in a forceful and forceful way. Karan said that Aneet did a workshop with acting coach Rachit Singh to bring out the main emotions.
“We did just one workshop with Aneet. Our show also deals with the traumatic effects of such a heinous crime. Rachit brings out the core emotions of a survivor, how she feels after such a crime takes place.
‘The first thing a survivor goes through is a loss of humanity, a loss of faith, a loss of faith in people. Aneet’s workshop testimony comes out brilliantly in one of the show’s best scenes, where he talks about a survivor’s trauma in court,” Karan tells us.
‘Credit goes to Aneet only’
Asked if Nitya and he consider themselves Aneet’s mentors, Karan says, “The person who should take credit for Aneet is Aneet. At the end of the day, I can put her in front of a scene; she has to do the scene, she has to do it. The credit goes to her. I’m very proud of her work. I’m very proud of that person, when she was becoming a man, when she would say he’s a friend. When He was there when I needed him.
