Director C Prem Kumar, who has wrapped up the shooting of his upcoming film starring Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil, is all set to explore new creative collaborations. The 96 The director told NDTV that he plans to direct stories written by other writers after completing his fifth film. This collaborative approach is common in Malayalam cinema, and Janu The director believes it has merit.
The Miazhagan The director tells NDTV, “I am happy to write my own scripts. Also, I have already started working with another writer, who is writing two scripts for me. I am also writing a few scripts with some other writers. After my fifth directorial, I will take up these projects,” he says.
When asked if anyone has approached him to direct his script, Prem Kumar said that it has not happened yet. “Maybe if someone asks for my script and I don’t want to direct it, so be it,” he adds.
Meanwhile, the shooting of his upcoming film with Fahadh Faasil has been completed and is currently in post-production. The director, who is in Kochi for the dubbing of the film, says it may release by the end of this year or the first quarter of next year, depending on various factors.
“Shooting is over. We are in post-production. We are expecting a release probably by the end of the year or first quarter of next year. I can’t give an exact date yet,” he says.
Prem Kumar added that he prefers to focus on one project at a time rather than immediately moving on to his next film.
Before starting your direction with 96 In 2018, Prem Kumar worked as cinematographer in eight films. Reflecting on his journey in cinema, he says that every role comes with its challenges.
“Being an assistant is more difficult than a chief technician because you have to think for someone else while balancing your own sensibilities with the person you work for. You can’t just be someone else’s cinematographer; you have to bring your own sensibilities to the job. As a cinematographer, you have to develop the language of the story and the director.”
“Writing is a whole different ball game. You have to ignore what you know and focus on emotion and structure. Once you write, the writer has to kill. You have to kill the writer and think like a director. Those are two different roles.”
“As a director, you have to bring all the technicians together, make them understand your vision and combine their efforts towards the script. Nothing is easy, but everything is exciting,” says Prem Kumar, signing off reiterating his love for writing.
