As Nivin Pauly talks to NDTV about the film, he says that he doesn’t look at ‘pan-Indian’ cinema while making a film – he feels that a film should organically connect with audiences from all regions.
The Malayalam film industry has undergone a significant shift in the last decade, with OTT platforms taking Malayalam cinema to audiences outside Kerala. But Nivin says he is currently not selecting scripts specifically with a pan-Indian or non-Malayali audience in mind.
“Right now, I am focusing only on the Malayalam audience and Malayalam films. A film made in any language is a film, right? Be a part of that film and make it with integrity. If you write it really well, I think it will resonate with all audiences. I have been approached for Telugu and Hindi films and I am open to them. If I like a good script in another language, I would like more good characters. Will meet them,” he insists.
In his career, he has worked in genres which are a part of an actor’s growth and in this journey, he has seen both success and failure.
“Every actor will have a journey, right? I think it’s my journey. In the early days, I did boy-next-door films, then I did serious roles, and right now I’m planning to do more entertainment roles. It’s a pendulum. Success and failure will make you mature in terms of your career and the way you look at films,” he said.
But has he regretted doing any film?
“Those films were the right choice during that time, but will we regret it later? But again, it’s all part of the journey. Today, BKU There is a blockbuster but we don’t know what is going to happen with my next film. Cinema is a journey.”
For an established star, finding the right script can be as challenging as entering cinema in the first place. “Today, I think getting a good script is a challenge. We hear so many stories in a day or we read so many summaries. But when it comes to a fully written script that is attractive, it is a bit difficult,” says Nivin, adding that the story is the main factor that makes him sign the film. “The story should be added at the beginning. Then the script.”
With careers spanning decades, along with Mammootty and Mohanlal, the biggest stars of Malayalam cinema, Nivin laughs when you ask him if he hopes to continue doing well into his 60s and 70s. “Oh, no idea! The only thing I can hope for is that I get good films and I will be able to entertain the audience.
That is all we can plan for, nothing else. The rest is God’s grace,” he says humbly. We’re getting a chance to entertain the audience, right? Not everyone will get the opportunity to become an actor, even though many people want to be actors. Being an actor is difficult in itself. My motivation is to entertain the audience to the best of my ability.”
Nivin Pauly has largely kept his family life out of the spotlight, though he occasionally opens up about his wife and kids in interviews. Away from the cinema, the Action hero Biju The star says she is happiest at home with her children. “Whenever there is no shoot, I like to stay at home. I like to spend time with my kids,” he says happily. Onam and Christmas are his favorite festivals, largely because it gives the family time to spend together. “It’s vacation time for kids and as a family, we travel during this time,” he says. And what is his favorite food? “Biryani”, he smiled.
He has a Tamil film coming up with director Ram Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai which he describes as a multi-layered film with multiple characters and intertwining storylines. “It is releasing on October 1 and it has turned out well. Suri has done a great job in the film, so has Anjali. It is a proper Ram film,” he says.
