Karan Johar’s 2006 film Never say goodbye has long divided audiences over its approach to infidelity. Still, it goes without saying, this is a film that has never stopped attracting attention. Director Karan Johar recently opened up about the challenges he faced while making the film, saying that his late father Yash Johar had never allowed him to tackle such a sensitive subject.

Karan Johar was at the Marrakesh International Film Festival for a talk series and to present a gala screening of his production. house to house Directed by Neeraj Ghewan.

In a conversation, Karan Johar shared, “It was a very complicated film to shoot. In the mainstream, it was one of those big-budget films dealing with the subject of infidelity. For Shah Rukh Khan, who is a husband, brother, lover, son, to step outside the confines of his marriage and have an affair – we didn’t know if the audience would accept the relationship.”

She added, “It was very difficult every day. Shah Rukh and I would discuss it, and he would tell me, ‘I don’t know how to make myself likable.’ I told him, ‘You are Shah Rukh Khan – how can anyone not love Shah Rukh Khan? You are love.’ We had complicated scenes every day that tended toward infidelity. We were challenged as directors and actors. I didn’t know how to justify them.”

Furthermore, he explained how it was a ‘leap’ he took – for which he remains grateful. He recalled how people thought he might have ‘lost the plot’. There were also a lot of questions about why he would do this with Shah Rukh Khan, as the story was considered premature.

“I remember being lectured by a big film star in a hotel lobby, where he asked me, ‘How can you do this to Shah Rukh? How can you support infidelity?’ I told him, ‘I can’t support what already exists. There is no such thing as supporting infidelity – it exists in everyone’s life.’ I said I was glad and proud of it: ‘Thank you for your advice, but I will not take it.’

Karan Johar recalled how he lost his father Yash Johar before directing Never say goodbye.

“He was my moral compass. In many ways, I don’t think he would have ever allowed me to direct this film because he was a very traditional, conservative man. And he had the utmost respect for Shah Rukh. When he passed away, I felt that the regime was no more, so I decided to break all boundaries and barriers and realize that this is what I wanted to experience when I grew up.”

Directed by Karan Johar, Never say goodbye In August 2006, came the story of Dev (Shahrukh Khan) and Maya (Rani Mukerji), who are unhappy in their respective marriages but find true love in each other. What follows is a mess of guilt, jealousy, and heartbreak that clouds their affair. The film also starred Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta and Kiran Kher in lead roles.
