The Indian Medical Association (IMA) today wrote a letter to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav demanding an immediate review of the matter headed by Sunny Deol. Surya – from beginning to end about its portrayal of the medical profession and violence against healthcare workers. The statement comes days after the teaser was released, the plot of which revolves around alleged malpractices in the healthcare sector.

“We wish to express our serious concern over the portrayal of the medical profession in the film ‘Suriya – Anth Se Arbham Tak’. Its promotional content raises concerns about the normalization of corruption within healthcare, the depiction of violence against medical professionals, and the potential consequences for public confidence and the safety of healthcare workers,” read an official statement by the IMA.

The medical body has detailed its main concerns about the film in a letter to the Union Minister. they:

1. Inappropriate generalization and damage to the reputation of the medical profession: Risk of creating an impression of corruption, unethical practices, and alleged corruption within the medical community. While individual misconduct should be investigated and punished, the actions of a few should not be used to tarnish the reputation of countless honest and dedicated physicians.

2. Portrayal of violence against healthcare professionals: Scenes depicting physical attacks on doctors, nursing staff and hospital workers, especially when presented as heroic or justified actions, risk normalizing violence against those committed to saving lives.

3. Safety and Security Concerns of Healthcare Workers:
Doctors and healthcare workers already face serious security challenges in hospitals. Content glorifying attacks on medical professionals can incite hostility and further endanger those providing essential health care services.

4. Undermining public confidence in doctor-patient relationship:
Such portrayals can create unnecessary mistrust and hostility toward physicians, undermining the mutual trust and cooperation necessary for effective treatment and health care delivery.

The statement added that IMA fully understands and respects “freedom of creative expression”. However, it should be used with a sense of responsibility, especially when “the safety of healthcare workers and the public’s confidence in essential services are at stake”.

The concerns put forward by the body, along with the request to address them, are:

  • Make a fair review of the film’s content and its portrayal of the medical profession.
  • Demand appropriate corrective measures from the filmmakers to address the normalization of alleged misconduct and depiction of violence against healthcare workers.
  • Consider a ban or other appropriate action if justified under applicable law.
