Vijay Sethupathi has confirmed this Maharaja 2 is in development The actor revealed that director Nithilan Saminathan has already told him the story of the sequel. He also talked about the 2024 Hollywood remake of the film and said that he is ready to be a part of it for free.
At the audio launch of Baththa, Vijay Sethupathi shared an update about his next collaboration and said that he was impressed with the story that the director had written for the sequel.
“Nithilan is an amazing director. He has a great sense of writing. He narrated the story to me recently Maharaja 2. It was very beautiful. It was wonderful to work with him,” said Vijay Sethupathi during the event.

Vijay Sethupathi Hon Maharaja’s success
Maharaja Became one of the biggest Tamil films of 2024. While Vijay Sethupathi believed in the film from the beginning, he admitted that he did not expect to reach such a large audience.
“We never expected Maharaja To go this far. The movie was good, but some people didn’t trust the movie. I had that confidence, but I didn’t expect it,” he said.

The film’s success was not limited to India. Producer Sudhan Sundaram of Passion Studios recently informed Vijay Sethupathi that a Hollywood agency has acquired the remake rights.
“He called me recently and told me that he has sold the Hollywood rights of the film. I told him, ‘I will do a film for free. Cast me in that Hollywood remake. I will go to Hollywood! It makes me very surprised and happy. I have always been very interested in working in Hollywood, but most of all, I am very happy to have my film in Hollywood,'” he said.
Is Matthew McConaughey ready to play the role of Vijay Sethupathi?
Producer Sudhan Sundaram confirmed the development in an interview with The Times of India. He said that after the film’s successful run in China, the makers were approached for the remake rights.
“After the success of the film in China, where the film did very well at the box office (Rs 91.65 crore, according to Secnilak) and on OTT, we were approached by a Hollywood agency for the remake rights. They are now looking to set up the project with an A-list star. The film is likely to go on floors by next year,” said Sudhan of Time of India.
“Maybe McConaughey is one of the stars they’re talking to, but only the agency will be able to confirm,” he added.

Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, Maharaja follows a barber whose complaint about a missing dustbin leads him to the police station. However, the story soon turns into something more disturbing.
Vijay Sethupathi plays the role of a barber, while Anurag Kashyap plays the antagonist. Sanchana Namidas is playing the role of Vijay’s daughter.
