Indian box office is often dominated by films with huge star power and marketing budgets running into crores. But the history of cinema is a testimony that the real bet of the box office is not always decided by the opening weekend. Sometimes some films enter the theaters without any fanfare and make a place in the hearts of the audience just on the strength of their powerful story. In the language of cinema, it is called a ‘sleeper hit’.
From ‘Queen’ to the recently released ‘I Will Be Back’, there are many films that have proved that if the story is strong, positive word of mouth can break even the biggest records at the box office. Let’s take a look at the box office journey of 5 such amazing films:
1. Rani (2014)
When ‘Queen’ directed by Vikas Bahl was released in March 2014, no one could have imagined that the film would become one of the most memorable films of Indian cinema. The Kangana Ranaut starrer had a very cold and simple beginning. But as people watched the ‘Queen’s trip to Paris and her journey of self-discovery, the crowds at the theaters began to swell.
Box Office Collection: According to Secnilak data, the film grossed a total of ₹78.90 crore in India and abroad and became a cult classic sleeper hit.
2. Badlapur (2015)
When director Sriram Raghavan introduced Varun Dhawan, who often plays the chocolate boy in ‘Badlapur’, in a very dark and aggressive look, initially the audience showed some reluctance. Released in February 2015, this revenge drama did not get off to a great start. However, due to the film’s taut suspense and exceptional acting by Varun Dhawan-Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the film earned the title of proving to be a long race horse.
Box Office Collection: The film did a good business of ₹ 52 crore (net) in India on the back of strong word-of-mouth promotion, as reported by Secnilak.

3. Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015)
Before the release of this film made under the banner of Yashraj Films, there was no special buzz or buzz in the market. Released in February 2015, the film launched Bhumi Pednekar in Bollywood opposite Ayushmann Khurrana. Set against the backdrop of 90s Haridwar and a unique family structure, the audience slowly fell in love with this story. While big films tend to die after the weekend, this one has picked up the pace.
Box Office Collection: The film grossed ₹42.79 crore worldwide, thanks to strong recommendations from the audience.
4. 12th Fail (2023)
Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, ’12th Fail’ is the perfect and biggest example of a ‘sleeper hit’ in recent years. When the film hit the theaters in October 2023, several big commercial films stood in front of it as a challenge. The Vikrant Massey starrer had a slow opening, but the reviews on social media and the general public were so great that the film didn’t come out of theaters for weeks.
Box Office Collection: According to Secnilak, the film’s worldwide collection stood at ₹67 crore, completely blowing away the initial estimates.
5. I’ll Be Back (2026)
The recently released film ‘I Will Be Back’ in June 2026 is also seen to be moving forward on this magical trend. The film’s business was sluggish in the first three days (opening weekend) of its release and there were speculations that the film would flop. But due to the strong screenplay and emotional connect, the audience accepted it enthusiastically and the film saw a huge jump in its earnings during the working days.
Box Office Collection: According to the latest data from Secnilak, the film has collected more than ₹41.80 crore in India so far. Since the film is still running strong in theatres, its ultimate lifetime collection is expected to grow huge.

All these films are a very important lesson for the film industry that star power, huge budget and PR marketing alone can give a film a good start, but the long and successful journey of the film depends only on the audience’s choice (content). A slow start doesn’t always mean the end, sometimes it’s the start of a long and historic innings.
