Baby Doll singer Kanika Kapoor announced her separation from husband Gautam Hathiramani through an Instagram post on Tuesday. Married for 4 years, Kanika has known Gautam for 15 years. Calling her an acquaintance, Kanika said she doubted whether Gautam would accept her as she is a divorced woman with three children. The singer also asked Gautam for marriage ‘twice’ before he finally proposed to her in 2021, a year before their wedding.
“Gautham has been a strong support system as a friend, and I realized that over the years, which is why I was actually the one who asked him to marry me! Well, not once, but twice (laughs!). The first time I asked him was in 2014 after the release of Baby Doll. However, he just rolled his eyes because he thought I was joking. Then when I asked him again, In 20 years, he understood. Kanika credits her ‘happiness’ to Gautham accepting her past gracefully.
“Gautham accepts me for who I am… a mother, an artist, a daughter and a friend. He proposed a year ago, and I was shocked because I wasn’t sure if we would ever get married. It was because of my own doubts. The fact that I am a divorcee with three children, I wasn’t sure if I would be accepted by him and his family.” But he was wrong in the interview.
Kanika was previously married to businessman Raj Chandok, with whom she has three children – daughters Ayana and Samara, and son Yuvraj.
Kanika married Raj in 1998, when she was just 18 years old. After their marriage, she moved to London, where she lived for several years and raised her children.
They dropped it in 2012. Kanika returned to India to pursue a career in music.
Kanika married Gautham in May 2022 in a grand yet intimate ceremony held in London. Gautam’s wedding was attended by Kanika’s children.
“It was a very emotional moment for me when my son took me to the mandap and while my daughters were taking parhe with me. I could see in their eyes that they were all very happy for me. They even danced to the music of my songs,” Kanika said recalling the moment.
Kanika Kapoor shot to fame in 2014 with her smash hit song Baby Doll from the Sunny Leone film Ragini MMS 2. Composed by Meat Bros, the song became an instant hit, establishing him as a popular singer. Her hitlist includes Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer, Lovely from Happy New Year, Chittiyan Kalaiani from Rai, Desi Look from Ek Paheli Leela, Nachan Phrate from All Is Well, to name a few.
