first reaction to The Tom Holland-led Spider-Man: Brand New Day is here, and it looks like the Marvel superhero has managed to get to where he wanted to be. Immediately following its worldwide premiere, journalists and critics highly praised Tom’s work in the latest installment of the superhero film franchise. Some of them even named it the best Spider-Man film of all time. IFurthermore, some early reviews highlight that the film contains many pleasant surprises with regard to the plot twists and particular character developments that it features. Sadie sinks.
First reviews from journalists and critics
George MacKay of Deadline called Spider-Man: Brand New Day “a brilliant love letter to Spider-Man” and “undoubtedly the best Spider-Man movie to date.” He wrote on
Adam Hlavac, a Los Angeles-based digital creator and producer, was equally excited after watching the film. “My nervousness is over. I loved #spidermanbrandnude! Destin Daniel Cretton and Tom Holland put their heart and soul into this thing, and it paid off big! This film is going to be huge and we will be talking about it for some time. I was amazed at how well everything is balanced – emotion, humor, action, practical vs. visual effects, score, and cinematography. Even with some of the larger pieces in the set it feels very handmade and is filled to the brim with hearts. It was absolutely worth the wait. And soon,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day release date in India
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is all set to release in theaters in India on July 30 in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. The film is expected to gross over $800 million worldwide in its opening weekend. If that happens, it would put Spider-Man: Brand New Day in the spotlight for the second-biggest global opening of all time behind Avengers: Endgame and its massive $1.2 billion debut.
Germain Lussier of Gizmodo had a particularly emotional reaction to the film. He wrote on
Jonathan Sim, a celebrity reporter and anchor, was particularly impressed by the film’s visuals. He wrote, “From a visual perspective, #SpiderManBrandNewDay is the best MCU #SpiderMan movie by a long shot. The cinematography is phenomenal, the action sequences are very dynamic and well-choreographed.”
A more mature Spider-Man story
Fandango correspondent Eric Davis believes that the new film has grown up with its main character. He described it as “Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day infuses a brutal energy into Spidey’s latest adventure, delivering all the thrills you’d expect from a Tom Holland Spider-Man film, while also feeling darker, more thoughtful, and more mature than the previous trilogy. That maturity extends beyond the story to the action, with Cretton crafting some of my favorite #SpiderMan fight scenes of the Holland era.” Part spy story, part psychological thriller, part buddy comedy (the Spider-Man/Punisher banter is a lot of fun), it expands in exciting new directions before becoming a true love letter to the fans, you’ll understand it when you see it, and yes, the Sadie Sink mystery is perfect.
ScreenRant’s Molly Freeman was even more eloquent in her praise: “I don’t say this lightly: #SpiderManBrandNude is the best Spider-Man movie ever made. It’s the most lived-in Marvel movie ever… This is Marvel movies – what all superhero movies should aspire to.”
Laura Sirikul of Forbes was similarly enthusiastic, calling the film “awesome”. He highlighted the VFX as well as the emotional writing and pacing, which he said “didn’t feel like video games in the past.”
Peter Howell, a film writer, appreciated the fact that the new film appears to move away from the multiverse-heavy storytelling that has dominated parts of the MCU in recent years. He said the film “returns to multiverse tedium to give us a grounded Spider-Man story”, while praising Tom Holland for “finally unleashing the sarcasm, angst and love troubles of Spidey/Peter Parker since Stan Lee first envisioned the character”.
Matt Neglia. Next Best Picture’s EIC wrote a lengthy note, “It’s truly a new day for Peter Parker as Destin Daniel Cretton replaces Jon Watts in the director’s chair for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Cretton brings a more grounded, back-to-basics approach to the beloved web-slinger, making this fourth standalone film feel like both a fresh reset and necessary evolution for the character, giving Tom Holland new depth. There’s room to be found. Consistent pitch-perfect performance.”
He further added, “The inclusion of the Punisher and the Hulk is fun and provides the typical MCU style of action and comedy, but the film doesn’t fully pick up the pace until Sadie Sink’s character announces herself to the world and changes the future direction of the franchise. The pacing and visual effects are inconsistent and it’s nowhere near as fun as previous installments. Still, the heart of this film, and its best scenes, are Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon is there and he’s fantastic. Everything that’s asked of him, Cretton’s years of investment in these characters and their new dynamics, which Peter is trying his best to navigate, brings a welcome layer of emotional weight to this story about isolation and loneliness, connection and rebirth.
Banjare puts Peter Parker’s grief into music
The excitement surrounding Spider-Man: Brand New Day extends to its music, too. Keeping in mind the theme of the film, the team joined hands with Banjare and Sony Music India for a more emotional track titled Barsaat.
Produced and performed by indie duo Banjare, best known for Baron, the song depicts Peter Parker’s emotional state when he learns that MJ has moved on with his life and no longer remembers him. This heartbreak is expected to be a key part of the film, with the story exploring Peter’s struggle to accept that the person he loves has effectively forgotten their shared past.
For Banjare members Sumit and Anuj, both longtime Spider-Man fans, the collaboration had a personal connection. They explained, “Barsaat is incredibly close to our hearts. We wrote it when we were going through our own heartbreaks and personal struggles. Every song we make has a story, and love has always been at the core of our music. Barsaat came to life naturally when we were just jamming together on a monsoon evening, and that’s how it got its name.”
The duo shared, “When we watched the trailer of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and saw Peter Parker trying to come to terms with the love of his life now that he doesn’t miss her, we immediately found echoes of Barsi in his journey. We’re so glad to see that Haryanvi music isn’t just local and with this collaboration, it’s making global waves.”
His connection with the franchise goes back years, with the composer also crediting the music from previous Spider-Man films as a major influence. He added, “Since Spider-Man: Homecoming, the music from the film has been special to us. We remember blasting the background score after watching the film in 2017. While Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is our favorite superhero, Michael Giacchino’s is our favorite musical superhero in the franchise.”
Interestingly, the new promo for Spider-Man: Brand New Day also features pop band Catsy’s new song ‘Animal’.
